Love this album, would probably make my desert-island list, I've been playing it again recently. It came out 20yrs after her 60s hits, features some songs by The Smiths, who provide backing on at least one track & the whole re-emergence encouraged by Morrissey & Marr. To be truthful, before this, I had never realised she had such vocal pluck & attitude.... Take a listen to a few of these to start the weekend .... Thanks Owen, I had not heard of this album. I had an unhealthy crush on Ms Shaw in the sixties when I was a spotty teenager. I saw her live at the Auckland Town Hall in 1965 or 66. She was on the same bill as the Pretty Things. They were considered very wild at the time. Little did we know what was yet to come in the world of rock 'n roll ...

Yes, I was playing it on CD. I think I might be the odd man out on this forum, I must be the only one without a turntable. However, that might be rectified soon. Still, it is all about the music, not the format. As for God don't never change, it is the best 'tribute' type album I have heard. Indeed! Now playing on vinyl. Not so sure what to make of this, as the originals are just so good. Ooops, I hope I haven't given you a bum steer. And I do agree, the originals are pretty damn good.

Good haul.... Beecham/RPO's '57 recording of Peer Gynt excerpts was/is the benchmark, according to my '84 &'87 Penguin Record Guides, eg.... "moments of magical delicacy". I've got the Suites by Karajan & Marriner, the latter regarded by Penguin as merely 'servicable', in comparison to Beecham Was listening to this last night - it's an '83 digital recording & it does have a slight 'edge' & lacks a bit of delicacy & extension both ends, but I was shaken by the bass punch (tympanis) in the 'Stormy Evening, P Gynt's Homecoming' in the 2nd Suite finale. EMI/HMV classical, almost always have good sound, I usually prefer them to Philips, Decca or DG.

Yesterday dragged out an old twofer Procal Harum lp on the Fly label of their self titled first release(mono) and Salty Dog. I'm guessing that the 1st lp is a copy of the US release as it does feature THAT song which the UK didn't. The records both looked a bit the worse for wear but gave #1 a quick clean, flipped the mono switch and very surprised that it played through with very little background noise. I can't remember ever buying this particular album and thought it may have been in a pile I rescued from the uncaring hands of my youngest brother but he claims he never owned a copy. There's a UK pound sticker on the cover so it's possible I obtained during my time in London in the mid '70s but I can't member that either. Whatever the source, a pleasant surprise. Followed that up with some Porcupine Tree, In Abstenia.

Saxophonist Jan Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble Officium . Wonderful interplay between Garbarek's soprano and tenor sax and soaring vocals - music to feed the soul

Hi robertr - I've never heard Garbarek with voices like that, but he's done many non-jazz projects. I have one album, 'Paths, Prints' (which I have yet to grasp) & one with Jarrett's quartet. Cheers.

Wonderful interplay between Garbarek's soprano and tenor sax and soaring vocals - music to feed the soul Garbarek can sound a little bit tame at times, which given the right mood doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. However, with the Hilliard, music to feed the soul indeed, even though my vinyl copy isn't the best. I'm hanging out for a vinyl version of Mnemosyne.

Thanks for posting the clip Owen - very interesting. I came to Mr Garbarek by way of The Hilliard Ensemble, so I don't know too much about his other work. Mnemosyne has a broader range than Officium, which adds some interest. I wonder why ECM has not released it on vinyl - perhaps it did not sell as well as Officium in CD format.

Autechre were really at their peak in the 90s, after which (IMO) it was pretty much a slippery slope into uninvolving noisescapes. Album-wise, I don't think I bought anything after Tri Repetae, but their EPs of the time were packed full of goodies. Eg, this track from Anvil Vapre

Ry Cooder, so many great albums, and this ones right up there - And, has my favourite version of "Vigilante Man" -
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]
