on the art of music public domain label, pressed on 180-ish g white vinyl, it's a typical cheapskate package of three classic albums (calendar girl-1956, julie at home-1960, julie-1957)in a glossy tri-fold cover adorned with a single black + white image pinched off getty images. the biggest surprise is all 3 discs are flat and quiet ! if a no-name label can do it why can't the real record companies sonically it's blah. compared to my legit rhino and emi cds julie's voice sounds flat and colourless. there's no real soundstaging and occasionally it sounds out of phase but julie is firmly anchored between the speakers. of course there is no provenance listed but this sounds like it was cut from an mp3. not bad for 9.98 but i'm not about to buy any more public domain records. Julie London, yes hmmmm.... Impressive stoic concentration from the bass player.

holiday winding down - last night and this morning's listening, working my way through this recent arrival:
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]

Thanks Owen Just heard it - 'Richard' - fine song. And in her interview she said she's planning to tour with a full band later in the year, after her european dates. Looking forward to getting her next album 'Preservation'

Heard Nadia Reid for the first time yesterday at Guitardudes place - was surprised to find I really enjoyed it. Shall track down a copy. Mrs Heathen will almost certainly appreciate her work...

Best time of the day at work- have the place to myself and David Gilmore, Echoes , Live in Gdansk via portable system.
On the trudge to work Cowboy junkies, Neath the Covers, songs by The Cure, Springsteen, Youngbloods, Townes Van Zandt and Neil young. Nice ep. The CJ have always featured covers through their career and have put many up on their web site but I'd really go for a double cd compilation.

Shine a Light, the new billy Bragg/ joe henry Railway field recording album. Nice vinyl copy I picked up from slowboat at the weekend. Lovely packaging, nice recording, pressings all good. The cynical side of me would comment on the fact of 2 50 year old millionaires playing megabuck vintage Gibson guitars invoking the spirit of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly......

Coincidentally I was just savouring some of Margo Timmins' solo work, last wk & weekend. You may have listened to this cover.....

Hi owen,
yes well worth checking out, I was very impressed with the vinyl version, lovely packaging and liner notes. From what I understand Mr Bragg came from a fairly privileged upbringing. Still a nice album regardless.

Good haul.... Beecham/RPO's '57 recording of Peer Gynt excerpts was/is the benchmark, according to my '84 &'87 Penguin Record Guides, eg.... "moments of magical delicacy". I've got the Suites by Karajan & Marriner, the latter regarded by Penguin as merely 'servicable', in comparison to Beecham

I think I might be the odd man out on this forum, I must be the only one without a turntable. However, that might be rectified soon. Still, it is all about the music, not the format. As for God don't never change, it is the best 'tribute' type album I have heard.

Love this album, would probably make my desert-island list, I've been playing it again recently. It came out 20yrs after her 60s hits, features some songs by The Smiths, who provide backing on at least one track & the whole re-emergence encouraged by Morrissey & Marr. To be truthful, before this, I had never realised she had such vocal pluck & attitude.... Take a listen to a few of these to start the weekend ....

Not so sure what to make of this, as the originals are just so good.
