spoke too soon, damnit ! while the vega was near perfect, the norah jones is afflicted with a scritchy, scratchy, spitty, farty noise on side 1. replacement time !

looks like amazon is tightening up on return procedures. initially they asked me to return the and copy within 30 days. i queried this in light of my return history customer service replied no need to return if cost of doing so exceeded product cost. i forwarded an nz post quote of $33.48 to return in the amazon big box. next email received - no need to return.

received today - public service broadcasting live at brixton from southbound records. 2x lp, dvd, download in a nice gatefold sleeve. disappointed in the dvd (record companies get with the times, sd has no place in an hd world) and the download - 320kbps mp3, the last album had a flac download. the music is superb. pressing par for modern vinyl - disc 1 wavy, with a few minor crackles; disc 2 flatter and a few minor crackles. nothing objectionable. img bbFound this in the garage recently... What a performer he was in his prime. Gorgeous. Saw him at the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival one year. John Spencer and Dr. John too. Awesome.

Just checking out the new Parquet Courts album on Spotify... I'm sure I'll buy the vinyl but it seems to lack that special magic we witnessed on both Light Up Gold and Sunbathing Animal...

Listening sessions over the hols resulted in my chasing down some titles off my 'wanted' list. Greatly enjoying Jakob Bro's 2 ECM vinyl albums meant I explored his back catalogue. Thus, today in the mail from PladeKisten in Denmark (very responsive) the CDs arrived: Time, Balladeering, December Song (all with Bill Frisell contributing) and BRO/KNAK which contains the fine tune Izu: I'm looking forward to listening to these earlier titles. Another ECM title I'm enjoying is Marcin Wasilewski Trio's - Spark of Life. And my current favourite local talent Nadia Reid's - Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs album, saw us catching her live and pre-ordering her next release: Preservation, unheard and un-reviewed. There are songs on the 'Listen to...' album that are remarkable and showcase her voice, songwriting ability and promise. cheers, f

I'm listening to this... Loud, aggressive, dispossessed. Love it. Cloud Nothings: Attack On Memory While cleaning up this... Sigh...

Rolling Stones this afternoon with a nice single malt. Vinyl part of the big Brussels Affair box, 3xlp/2xcd set/book/watch/poster etc. Not one of the autographed editions but not complaining as it was cheap. Night time in the bedroom system working through various John Martyn deluxe reissues from a few years back. Tonight revisiting Grace and Danger.

Will have to hunt it down as I love her first album.

I like that the the singer-songwriter, folksy-americana thing is taking hold here - also Aldous Harding, Lydia Cole, Holly Fullbrook... To me, there's a bit of Margo Timmins in Nadia Reid. Cheers.

Maybe cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I had a bad experience ordering direct from Spunk. No acknowledgement of initial order, no shipping details, basically no communication once my money was taken. Emailed and response took over a week. LP did arrive but it had non fill issues and noise. Emailed, and asked if I can try it on another turntable. Replied. No response, so gave up. Vowed to never, ever order from them again.

Spunk have my dosh for Nadia's 2nd release - set for early March. I hope this vinyl is OK - will report. My only experience with them was getting her first release on CD - all went fine.

shock ! horror ! i bought the no-name julie london 3lp set from the warehouse buy 1 get one 1/2 price sale. on the art of music public domain label, pressed on 180-ish g white vinyl, it's a typical cheapskate package of three classic albums (calendar girl-1956, julie at home-1960, julie-1957)in a glossy tri-fold cover adorned with a single black + white image pinched off getty images. the biggest surprise is all 3 discs are flat and quiet ! if a no-name label can do it why can't the real record companies sonically it's blah. compared to my legit rhino and emi cds julie's voice sounds flat and colourless. there's no real soundstaging and occasionally it sounds out of phase but julie is firmly anchored between the speakers. of course there is no provenance listed but this sounds like it was cut from an mp3. not bad for 9.98 but i'm not about to buy any more public domain records.

arrived yesterday and listened to last night via redbook layer: Son House, Father of the Folk Blues. Analogue Productions hybrid SACD. I already have two versions of this on lp, my original 60s copy and the Pure Pleasure complete sessions double but it's always in my top ten teen years records so another copy can't go astray. Ordered from Elusive Disc who send in a bubble envelope and sadly front of the case is cracked. Not usually a problem but the case seems to be a unique design so I'll just have to live with it.

Rosanne Cash- the River and the Thread- bedroom system, so cd. I still believe that she is the big talent in the Cash family, much better songwriter but a bit hard for her to pull of that man in black bit.
Nice UK concert on You Tube
