Sought after by me at least. I sold mine and then spent a lot of time and money to find a replacement! So now have a yellow (non working) and a red one

Did Ken have an SP3B/C ? Or was it Dave W ?

Love the old ARC stuff, I used to service them in the late 80s and 90s. The poweramps had a complicated cross-coupled input stage and partly cathode-coupled output stage that I studied carefully. Roger Modjeski and I used to discuss ARC and William Z Johnson’s design philosophy quite a bit. Later ARCs were simpler. The SP3A had power supply flaws but classic Marantz 7-style circuitry. That’s back in the days when manufacturers put the schematic diagram in the instruction manual! Today’s manufacturers keep their schematics hidden and only let approved personnel see them.

Did Ken have an SP3B/C ? Or was it Dave W ? I think Dave had an Audio Research pre, and I had/have (still being repaired!) an SP6b, and I am currently running an LS5mk3 which I love. Dad had a Conrad Johnson, can't remember the model.

Ah yes, Dave W had an SP6B & I remember we A/B'd it against my (slightly tweaked) SP8 - I was surprised that the SP6B held its own easily, perhaps even a little more transparent & neutral tonally. I'll be interested in how your SP6B compares against the LS3. What's wrong with your SP6B?

always liked the conrad johnson sound, despite the reverse phase.
sidebar - seems a lot of likeable tube product reverses phase - cj, counterpoint, audible illusions et al

The LS5mk3 has more at each end. More detail, more bass. Delicious midrange. What more could you want? The SP6b has a hum which has yet to be fixed. Bit of a problem as it has so far cost $500 for the 4 power supply caps and it's getting to the point where it will be uneconomical to continue and that would be a shame. It's just sitting in the too hard basket at the moment.

After a tech in Tauranga had it for a year I took it to Clarry who did what he could then passed it on to Mark Maloney. He is stumped I think. (Maybe you should move this to it's own thread Owen 😉)

SP6B hum.....check the power supply regulators with an oscilloscope, they were prone to oscillating and the result was endemic hum. As long as grounding and the heater supply regulator are in order that will be the reason. Edit...forgot to also say, check the heater supply power supply capacitors, they will be very old by now and need replacing. The high voltage power supply derives its reference voltage from the heater regulator.

They don’t build them like that anymore! One of the classic Sansuis I studied carefully. Also the Au-X1 and my own BA-F1. They were some of the first amps with LAPT fast bipolar transistors by Sanken. (LAPT- Linear Amplifier Power Transistor). They could reach speeds of up to 100mHz so that the negative feedback correction factor would be high at high audio frequencies.

retro friday americana We just spent the afternoon in social isolation with 95BFM (Back on the Goodfoot >> Swapmeet >> Border Radio), and I am once again in awe of this tuner. It is a truly astounding piece of hifi history. Just trying to find a suitable mop handle attachment for my trusty McIntosh MR71 now... 🤪
