more big technics Alon Wolf wouldn't be impressed by all that attempted 'time alignment' of drivers, all that diffraction distortion created, etc.

Long ago and only a Z-5000.. the baby of the trio. It was OK. Massively built, heavy and solid, but still only a single capstan 3 head. I didn't think it was much better than my old V-800X, which as far as I can remember had the same transport and display, but lacked the calibration facility. The Z-6000 and Z-7000 were the ones to get. Michael's original post inspired me to extricate it, dust it off and get reacquainted.....and a bit of cleaning and a new mode control belt later... doesn't sound too bad for a rough old beast ....big too, and moderately weighty , if you like buying your cassette decks by the pound....

No particular reason, just any interesting looking space. Mostly a display room it seems, with turntables sitting in front of the loudspeakers.

Sony rack-style components, including a TC-88B cassette deck - sporting an impressively cool-looking sliding drawer & LCD meters instead of needle VUs.... (circa 1978) Did it really come in a 'gunmetal' finish?

Apologies if I've previously posted a pic of this gorgeous deck.... Technics RS 1500 series I believe, c.1980.

Yamaha were once design standard-setters back in the 70s-80s with their Natural Sound series..... (With a little help from Mario Bellini Architects of Italy.)

No particular reason again, this pic appears on Stefan Bertoncello's excellent Two Good Ears blog page. There have been pics of this German system on the web. Many European audio enthusuasts foster contact with Japanese audiophiles & a particular affinity for horn speaker & valve systems.

A nice vintage Thorens-Sansui set-up c.1980 with Graphic Equaliser! I think the following models: - Thorens TD 145 - Sansui TU-717 Tuner - Sansui AU-717 integrated amp - Sansui SE-7 Graphic Equaliser

Can never have too many pics of the Nakamichi LX-3, possibly the best looking cassette deck ever 1981-82.

Yup the Mario Bellini-designed Yamaha deck is a contender.

I'd probably put the Nakamichi 700ZXL/700ZXE ahead of the LX3/5 for looks, but way behind for temperamentality. The 700II isn't bad looking either if you like a classical look. Others that are cool... Technics RSM-95, and the original Akai GX-95. Still have to unpack my pix after a house move though

Ah yes the 3-head LX-5 would be top choice. And yes, the 700ZXL / 700ZXE is similarly cool - bonus marks for the vertically opening door panel. I'd like to know who was industrial designer for these early 70s models.
