Is this not a good buy at the offered price. A total novice to all things Garrard . I'm guessing that the arm maybe cuts the price back somewhat against the more usual SME etc.

Seems a good buy to me, but having just splashed out to help my housemate buy a more modern car, don’t have the cash reserves right now.

All things considered I don't think that that's too bad a price. $200 to $300 for the arm and cart. $100 to $200 for the plinth? Mahogany is a good material sound wise at least. Makes the 401 $1000 to $1200 Doesn't sound that outrageous to me. Much better than spending twice that on a 301!

I won a free copy of that particular lp around 1965 from the World Record Club. Can't remember if I threw it in the bin or gave it away but it never graced my player. I should have kept it in its virginal state and made a mint.

ditto probably sounds awful though. there have been good sounding compilations of star wars music buy i don't know of any really good sounding version of the original soundtracks. i've got a set of the special edition soundtracks on cd, they look very pretty with etched picture discs but sound mediocre.

I have all of those on LP, dont think ive ever played them but the booklets and sleeves are good fun. The most played one would be the star wars disco one....

I use a recent London-built Decca cartridge. As does jon. the Garrott version was regarded as the very best, before London took over production from Decca. In '83, Ken Kessler in HiFi For Pleasure said: " The Garrott brothers start by rebuilding the Deccas to the standard that Decca should have used.... The results are divine. The sound is heavenly. The effect is shattering... You wonder how you could have ever lived with anything else. " (!) Very nice! I use the 12” Siggwan arm, sadly no longer made. A shame James Grant (Analog Instruments) in Pukekohe isn’t making them anymore, so he can concentrate on his other job, a pilot. Apparently he became overrun with orders and had to choose one profession. Not surprising, it’s a great sounding, well made arm made of cocobolo wood. It was NZ$1400 or so new.

I thought it was family and his other hobby, guns that took over.

Work (commercial pilot) & growing family (2 boys IIRC). Training on new aircraft & longer hauls. And guns.

Unless its been repressed, this was initially limited to 150 lps, so I'd be surprised if those sites had any stock from 2014.
Edit - Marbecks has just confirmed that they have it in stock for $35

Didn't know it was limited ... seems an expensive exercise for just 150 copies.
They were pressed in Germany.
Southbound also have it in stock $39,95 Got mine from JB $32

Must've been more made, as surely all 150 would've been sold by now.

dunno, i've bought limited titles from vinyl factory, mondo etc. that just hang around for ages.
the only reference i could find to 150 copies was in the discogs listing ?

I'm sure I saw it somewhere else, but can now only find this press release from Graham Reid in 2014
"Nathan Haine's album 5 A Day is available November 28 and is being launched on December 4 in Auckland at the Tuning Fork. There will be a limited edition vinyl pressing"
|
Post by Citroen on Oct 3, 2019 16:33:48 GMT 12
Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak, Nathan says that there were 300 pressed and they are long sold out.
So I'm confused as to what these ones are that Marbecks and Southbound are selling. NOS?

I’ll find out tomorrow as I have ordered a copy from Marbecks. Half expect them to say, sorry out of stock!
