Here's the full response "Hi Steve, I’ve several customers buy Kinki Studio amps for panel speakers. Backordered two-weeks on pre-payment NZ$4280 No option for a trial, but I’ve never had one not suit or returned - my margin is too small to stock run-in amps for demo."
I'm in Hamilton..which isn't a problem, but I would want to hear it with my Maggies, and I'd rather not transport them. Anyway, I'll see how the pre-amp option pans out

Could be wrong but that response sounds like he doesn't even have them for demo?
Ah, your last post confirms this.

One option I've used before, with another retailer, is to see if their clients are willing to demo their system for you.

Do you know what model preamp, garym? I'm going to explore preamp options before I consider changing the amp. I'm looking for something with HT bypass to accomodate my home theatre requirements e.g. Prima Luna Evo 200 preamp or similar

Please someone else buy these. I am so tempted but would likely end up sleeping with them in the car when the financial controller finds out.

Approx 10 years old. But. Good gear is built to last. Good designs don't go out of date. The current versions are updated in subtle ways that have given more sonically but we're talking refinement on top of excellence so the earlier models don't lose out by much at all. They will outperform our One integrated which sells around the asking price. Original retail was around $20k. I have a pair of monos of the same vintage for my own use.

I sent you a PM this morning Garym - have you seen it? And I haven't specifically asked this because I assumed they would - will the PureAudio monos drive Magnepan 1.7's well?

No problem with the Maggies. I don't get notification for pms, I'll have a look at that now....

Sent you another PM Gary (only saying 'thanks anyway')
I'm out of the running for the PureAudio gear (only due to budgetary restraints ;-(), so if anyone was holding back on buying these out of deference to me - thanks, and go for it. I'm going to trial a PrimaLuna Evo 200 preamp and will let you know how that goes

For a quality integrated amp at a sensible price try the Rotel RA-1572 $2799 runout or new 1592 $4199 if you're flush. Power enough for Maggies, Built-in phono, DAC etc. These are the Golf GTI's of integrated amps.

Following up from earlier comments, an interesting discussion of the two type of phase splitter for valve amplifiers (transformer versus valve). It unfortunately didn't confirm my prejudices - I'm tempted to suggest that the author needs to find another transformer winder - but technically interesting and well explained.

I'm returning the PrimaLuna Evo 200 preamp tomorrow which I've had on trial since Monday. I liked the sound with my Maggies but the power required for high spl's caused instability/clipping with the NuPrime stereo power amp. I've been shortlisting various integrated amps with a reputation for working well with Maggies - PureAudio, Magtech, Hegel, Parasound, Kinki, etc. - and I'm about to try a Rogue Audio Pharaoh. I was tempted to buy a Magtech amp, but shipping costs, exchange rates, GST at the border, and the need to also match it with a preamp conspired to steer me towards the Pharaoh. If anyone is considering buying a Magtech amp - sanderssoundsystems.com/products/amplifiers/magtech-amp(500w into 8ohms, 900w into 4ohms and numerous excellent reviews) let me share the astonishing response I got from Sanders Sound Systems who manufacture these amps in the US: "Hi Steve, Thank you for your email and for your interest in our amplifiers. In short, the Magtech is by far the recommended option for driving your Magnepans. In fact, Maggies are largely to thank for the development of the Magtech amp in the first place. Our ESL Mk II amp became widely popular among planar magnetic speaker owners, thanks to its beefy power supply and robust output stage with a peak current rating of 150 amps. The Magtech amplifier improved on this design by adding a unique, fully-regulated power supply developed by Roger Sanders. As a result, it is more stable and offers 25% more power than the ESL Mk II amp, which is the same in every way except for its conventional, free-floating power supply. The Magtech is the only high power amp on the market with this technology. It is definitely the best amplifier we make for driving Magnepan and other (planar) magnetic speakers. Shipping cost to Hamilton, New Zealand is $345, so the total cost for the Magtech and shipping is $5,845 USD. It comes backed with our factory lifetime warranty for as long as you own the amp, and your satisfaction is guaranteed with our 30-day, risk-free, in-home trial. This works very simply and easily: We ship any equipment you want directly to your home. You use it in your familiar listening room, with your own associated equipment for up to 30 days . If you are not satisfied with the equipment for any reason, we insist you return it as we only want and have happy customers. If you return the equipment, we will pay to have it returned so it will cost you nothing to try our gear. There is absolutely no financial risk to you for trying our products. This is a much better way to audition equipment than going to a dealer's showroom where you listen in a strange environment for only a few minutes. You can only really get to know audio equipment by living with it for at least several days in your own home where you can use your own familiar associated equipment, listening room, and have plenty of time to listen to much of your music collection. We ship via UPS Worldwide Expedited service. There are no large trucks involved and the equipment is brought directly to your door. Shipping time is fast -- about one week. Some customers are uncomfortable using a 30-day trial because they feel it is an unreasonable expense for the manufacturer so they feel an obligation to buy the equipment. Please do not feel that way. It is actually much cheaper for a company to ship equipment to and from a potential buyer than it is to pay a dealer for their services. So we much prefer you to use an in-home trial as it saves us a great deal of money. Please do not feel reluctant to use our trial program. I hope this information has been helpful and that you take this opportunity to audition one of our amplifiers. When you are ready to place an order, please respond with your complete shipping address, contact phone number, and preferred method of payment. I will then respond with an invoice and payment instructions. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Great listening, -Josh Sanders Sound Systems 12054 Deer Trail Rd Conifer, CO 80433 USA" I have been unable to arrange home trials with some local dealers, and here is a manufacturer in the US who is prepared to offer a home trial of their equipment, at no cost to me if I decide to return it. Amazing! They must have great confidence in their product.

Hi steviewunda - would you just recap what was your system that was use at the moment? eg. - Denafrips Ares II DAC - or Troika-Linn-phonostage? - Prima Luna Evo 200 preamp - Nuprime amp (model?) - Magnepan 1.7 spkrs The list is mostly correct - the phono preamp is iFi iPhono 3 Black, and the NuPrime model is MCX-2
I didn't test for clipping through the phono input - I should have - that would have established whether it was the amp or DAC causing the clipping. Before trialling the PrimaLuna preamp, I had experienced instability at high volume using the Denon AVR X3700H pre-out to the Nuprime, and I think it happened on both DAC and phono inputs.

OK, these are VERY rough calcs.... If you're in say a medium sized room (say 4.5 x 3.5m?), sitting at a medium distance (say 4m?) & listening at moderately loud levels (say 85db av SPL).... Then the 86dB/W- 4 Ohm Magggie 1.7s will need only 70-100Wpc to drive them - allowing a comfortable 10x (20dB) dynamic headroom. (Using SPL Calculator.) The Nuprime MCX-2 might only need to output 1/10th of its rated power at 4 Ohms (700-800Wpc?) & it's input sensitivity is 1.6 Volts. So the Nuprime might need only sq rt((1.6v squared)/10), ie P = V squared/R input volts in your conditions. ie only ~0.5V input from the P-Luna preamp (which has 10dB (3.16x) gain. The DACs 2.2V output will be amplified 3.16x by the P-Luna & its vol control would be attenuated ~22dB at your listening level. That tells me that your preamp's volume pot might be sitting at ~2/3 maximum - which is quite high & at dynamic peaks the preamp might be approaching it's 'ceiling'. And... - The 1.7s DROP off quickly below 40-45Hz & if you happen to like plenty of low end (personal preference and/or music type), you may be winding things up further. - If you are winding it up to VERY loud levels, say 90dB av SPL, (using the SPL calc again...) you might then need 250Wpc into 4 Ohms from the NuPrime amp. Then, the preamp will need to output ~0.9V - the volume control will be only 18dB attenuated - eg. sitting at ~3/4 max volume. As said, these are only rough speculative guesstimates but.... my feeling is that a higher-than-10dB Gain preamp may be needed in your system & that may do the trick. OTOH, if any of my assumptions above (listening level, music, listening distance, etc) are off beam - then I'm talking nonsense

Thanks Owen - room size is 7.5m x 4.5m x 2.4m and I sit about 4m from the Maggies. When I get a chance I'll get my mic out and fire up REW and measure spl's at my listening position. It's possible that I have unrealistic expectations of the spl's the Maggies are capable of (you may have seen my contributions to a thread on hearing aids on this forum )

FWIW,
I've had 1.6s on the end of my Plinius 8150 (150w into 8 ohm).
Got loud enough for me without clipping. But was lacking in low end slam.
