It looks like an almost complete disassembly, repaint & rebuild to me. The mirror looks OK but the seller said it needs re-mirroring - replacing after you break it off the baseplate. Bearing condition unknown (despite seller's assurance). Motor electronics? Motor belt? Belts type/condition?/complete set?, flyweights peripheral o-ring needs replacing, springs & sobothane hemispheres missing, base side bars incomplete, adjustable cone feet? No record clamp or platter mat. It looks like a ealry 2000s motor/flywheel + a 1980s platter unit.

Major flags - "We have not tested the speed control"
The record clamp and platter mat were rudimentary, so no great loss. As for the mirror, I've never understood the need for this at all. All it does is attract dirt/dust, degrades so worsens the look.
Will be interesting to see the reserve price.

Apart from aesthetics of a plethora of spinning chrome , in the later Auras with acrylic baseplates, the circular mirror concealed a steel stiffening plate that supported the main bearing shaft & platter. (Which reminds me, the mirror edge trim (black plastic) is missing.)

Dave's design was not just for visual enjoyment .... The underhung flyweights were of course for additional rotational inertia, but were 'decoupled' from the main platter, resting under gravity only, relatively loosely on a plastic bushing around the main bearing pillar. The idea (after consulting experts on this, Dave said) was to reduce energy storage, by decoupling this signifcant main mass.

Shows you what I know, bidding up over $1700.00 already.

Reserve $2000, highest bid $1700. Offered for $1700. Looks like Graham will be having another project if bigdaddyshan gets his hands on it!

I see Bigdaddyshan didn't take up the offer. At $1700 I think it was a reasonable buy. Cosmetics aside, they're an easy fix especially for someone like Graham.
Motor controller. Chris Marquet has the circuit board for this, so even if the motor's stuffed it shouldn't be too difficult a fix. Or others have used other motors.

Chris probably has his feet up somewhere in retirement I expect, on a Greek Island The last time a spoke to Chris (10 yrs ago?) he had one left, which was going to someone else's Aura I've got Dave's original controler schematic.

3 years ago he replaced my motor's innards with the new circuit board, at the same time as replacing the motor (which had died).

I see Bigdaddyshan didn't take up the offer. At $1700 I think it was a reasonable buy. Shannon said he was just trying to find out the reserve when he bid, and then decided it was little past his means. Would probably still be a good buy at $1700 if he relists but needed a lot of work as well as a decent tonearm.

The big unknown is the condition of unipivot main bearing (seller's assurances notwithstanding) - a specialist part which Dave had made in Oz.

He's annoyed because most of the questioners are bored know-alls & time-wasters. Fair enough too, I say.

there's an infamous question asker called bmw_m5 in the TM motoring pages.
always asking water drop questions about amg headbolts, porsche ims bearings etc.
drives everyone nuts
but in the auction for his own car he has turned off the Q+A facility
LOL

Surely even in NZ the Black doesn't retail for $5K, does it? Graham from Eastern HiFi? Or was that a rhetorical question?

straight up Q a new black is $2500usd so $5k nzd would not be far off the one on tm appears to be an early goldline ?

From previous listings, I’d always assumed it was the Graham (ex Graham’s HiFi, Whakatane) who now owns EHF Tauranga. 🧐 :speculating:

I think his AudeoEnz name was very similar. Focal and Cambridge gear also suggests an EHF connection.
Just checked some old AudioEnz posts and yes 911man is Graham ex Graham's Hifi/EHF

Another Aura comes out of the woodwork Owen Y, any idea how many Dave actually made? I've never quite figured that out. Certainly the smaller 'Da Capo' version like this one, is less common. Dave started making Auras in around 1984 & was still making them in 2006 when he died. He continued building them when they lived in Brisbane for a few years & demand was strong when he sold through a dealer in Melbourne. After they returned to NZ, for a couple of years (I think), no Auras were produced whilst they were building their house in Albany. So that's ~20 years & in batches of 4-6 at a time? I really don't know - but they keep turning up!
