I won't bore you with the long history of the Hula Hut suffice to say it has been documented elsewhere This weekend is important though. Tonight marks my last night with my much loved JBL 4350A studio monitors. This speaker has dominated the Hula Hut for a while now & I have loved everything about them. Well except carting there 120kg each down 40 stairs and 200 meters across a muddy paddock last house shift They are massive, they are delicate, they have bass so deep your clothes move & man they are loud I have not made it past 110db. They play jazz, they play mono 50s divas, they play punk & many a DJ has played on them & loved them. Haha so why am I selling - well that's how it goes with this obsession time for a change & TAD's are incoming whoohoo My system at present; Main Rig Preamp - Valvet Soulshine (Mullard ECC186) Crossover - Lab Gruppen ACN3D Power amps - Quicksilver Silver Sixty monos with (RCA 6L6) Carver PMF950 Analogue - Denon RP53 Idler Drive Turntable (1962) in multi layer plinth - Zu Denon 103R with Soundsmith Ruby Cantilever & # 1 Stylus - Analogue Instruments Arm - Cinemag SUT - Custom Valve Phono Digital - Antipodes DS Reference Server - Clones Shiva DAC Speakers - JBL 4350A Studio Monitors TV Rig Epsom Projector Source, Tivo, PS4, Chromecast Amplification - Sony ES Speakers - Kef Reference 102, Veladyne subwoofer DJ Rig Tractor S4 Technics SL 1210M3D Pioneer CDJs & Pioneer mixer (loaned) fed digital to the Clones DAC Ming Da valve headphone amp

Dude, you are the man! But TADs? Seems almost sacreligious!? Dear me... You haven't been unduly influenced by that strange brutish chap on stereonet, have you? Whatever. Ignore me. I'm sure you will. And enjoy em. ...which I'm equally sure you will...

Haha - we are talking TAD Professional now young punkster. None of that store bought stuff here mate, TAD 1601 bass drivers in onken cabinets & TAD 4001 compression drivers in wooden radial horns. Ribbon tweeters & fancy crossovers from Germany. But they do have a very hard act to follow

Ok - last night the mighty JBL 4350A studio monitors left the Hut. In there place are some fantastic TAD speakers & Antique Sound Lab amps. So far sounding bloody amazing with lots of tweaking to go

Bloody Hell Beeman. For some unknown reason I thought you were downsizing. I should have known better. Cheers.

Wow! Looks fantastic and I'm sure sounds damn fine.
Perfect for some Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole in the hula hut?

Fat Boy Onkens + Yuichi horn + a tweeter on top? Consider time-aligning the mid/bass drivers.

Thanks Owen. The mid bass drivers are pretty close to aligned. The ribbon tweeter would be ideally suspended over the mid compression driver. Have not figured how to do this yet. A feature of the speakers is the Werner Jagusch crossovers custom built for this project. He builds crossovers for Shindo. The speakers present a very integrated and complete sound. One of my intentions was to reduce the bass loading of the room which has happened. They sound wonderful & after a weekend of listening & tweaking I am a very happy camper. What I do need is some really good wire for the hookup from the crossover to the speakers. I changed from standard jaycar wire to silver QED with a good result so that suggests it is a worthwhile tweak.

Wow, very cool indeed beeman. I have 5 metres of Duelund DCA16GA tinned copper multistrand wire in cotton and oil that I'd part with. Just a thought.

New Dueland hookup wire arrived today thanks to Gryffles prompt delivery cheers. Straight out of the bag it has done just what I was hoping it would. Smoothed & balanced the top end & there is a good 100hrs of burn to be at its best - stoked ;-)

Thanks Gryffles. I made up some interconnects with the bit I had left over. Bloody nice just ordered some more. The Quicksilvers are replaced by some very nice Antique Sound Labs Cadenza DT 845. So far almost settled on the tube compliment & sounding great. upload pic

Nice one beeman. Great to see you've made some interesting changes lately. You like the 845pp compared to the silvers? A long way from SE 300B.. those new speakers look like the business. More coherent? Better imaging vs the JBLs? Envious!

Hi Chilli - the speakers are certainly coherent. They image beautifully with plenty of tight powerful bass. My girlfriend still laughs when I say I downsized. Loving the amps too, I have always been a fan of big bottles. Been playing around with the driver tubes & have a quad of Gold Lion KT77 in there at the moment with Mullard E80CC gold pins & Siemens ECC82 silver plates. All working well to produce the sound I like. The Dueland cable seems to have settled now & is a best audio buy as far as I'm concerned. best image host

Latest addition in the Hula hut is a nice Sony-MCI-JH110 Reel to Reel. This deck gets mixed reviews but so far sounds great. The MARA refurbished machines sell for big bucks & are used in many recording studios who are after the analogue tape sound. I bought the machine working but unfortunately it seems to be stuck in fast forward on the up-take real. The other functions can be made to work and I can get it to play using the joggle lever. Any advice would be much appreciated. The video is a studio master of Herbe Hancock & Bill Laswell - a hiphop classic. www.facebook.com/stephen.blomfield.1/videos/10211654421628477/Attachments:

Did you end up getting the tape deck working? Bit of a beast! I hope you still have those speakers!

Must be time for a bit of an update; A move from Auckland to Wellington & a change of room size necessitated a reduction in speaker size. As luck would have it the guy the I got the TADs off was pining for them & now has them back ;-) At the same time he was heading over seas & kindly lent me a pair of JBL L100 studio monitors. Lovely little speakers that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Most of the rest of the system has remained the same with the exception of the addition of a very nice Studer/Revox RB99 reel to reel player currently with Marcus Wilson being repaired. I have since moved a couple of times & now have a half decent room. Much as I love the little JBLs time for something a bit more substantial, so trigger pulled today on a pair of JBL Urei 813bx studio monitors. Haha now all I have to do is try to not think about them as the find there way across the globe. Sorry about the poor quality phone pics

System update - work is complete on the Denon Nippon Columbia 1962 phono stage complete with Tamura TR 351 SUT specifically designed for the Denon 103 cartridge. This device is something special using 12ay7/6027 tubes & a modern Audio Note circuit diagram. Now we have Denon Nippon Clolumbia all the way for the turntable source. It is dynamic with the widest sound-stage I have ever heard. The clarity & location of individual instruments & players is at times startling. The claim the speakers just disappear is one I have heard but never experienced before. Recently it beat a 10K hi-end phono stage in A/B testing by a significant margin.

Gorgeous!!!
I’ve lusted after a Urei 1620 for the longest time - I had no knowledge of their JBL connection.
Thanks for sharing, beeman.
