Will call in next time I'm in Levin. I suspect those records will still be there or they might go up in price ! The labels were applied to an open ended outer bag, not directly top the record cover

"Points for good labels but those prices !"
Yep, prices: hell's teeth!
Mind you michaelw, when next in Levin, don't bother looking for the Elton John GYBR (red vinyl $150) Cooksferry will have snaffled that by now!

Didn't see that GBYBR was red vinyl. Got to be worth it then...

Kerikeri spca usually doesn’t sell LPs, but today had a box of the usual dross but with two jumping out at me to buy.
Moody Blues, Sur la Mer, 1988, Polygram 835 756, Australia pressing. Dan Fogelberg, The Innocent Age, 1981, Epic 2ELPS 0034, Australia or NZ.
Both unmarked vinyl and appear to have been seldom played. Covers excellent except for a very small name written on one cover. Both in protective plastic covers. Bit more expensive than most op shops at $5 each, but seem to be a bit more than that in the market. Happy, will add to the pile waiting ultrasonic cleaning.

Just spent a couple of days up your way. Wandering the main street we happened upon the Sound Lounge. Interesting store, plenty of CDs on offer. It looked like the type of place that would sell vinyl but I couldn't see any until I spotted a few shelves tucked away in the corner on my way out. All new and a reasonable selection but not easily browsed due to its location. By then my wife's patience had expired so we left. It probably cost the store a couple of impulse buys.

IHarvey, interesting, pass that shop often, but have never gone in, despite being able to see the shelves with LPs from the footpath. 1. Too low, can’t be bothered getting on hands and knees, and 2. Am assuming they will be overpriced. Just like our local Hospice op shop - they have a copy of Pink Floyd the Wall, not a very tidy cover, but asking $60!

The Levin place is excellent! Full of vintage guitars and microphones, a motorbike, a free piano on the pavement for people to play - what more do you want?? Nobody here needs to buy million-selling chart fodder at those prices, special editions aside - surely we're a bit more resourceful than that? What they do have, on the other hand is absolutely loads of stuff they think "nobody buys any more" and they may be right as it's niche but it might be YOUR niche. I picked up four Dean Martin LPs and a Nat 'King' Cole, all BIG, FAT, MONO original pressings in nice condition. So yeah!

Been a while since my last visit to an op shop, but scoured the $2 bins at Kerikeri hospice yesterday. I bought four interesting looking albums. Despite their age - three from the 1950s - all in very good to near mint condition. Will have an US clean before playing.
1. A10 inch Lp, mono circa 1953, Arthur guitar boogie Smith, “Fingers on Fire”, MGM D111, GBritain. 2. Benny in Brussels, Benny Goodman & Orch at Brussels fair 1958, mono in near mint condition, Columbia Special Products, P13502, USA. 3. Vivaldi, 6 flute concerti, Op10, Rampal flute, mono, circa 1958, remastered, Felsted L89003 ( a Decca label reissuing French titles - lasted from late 1950s to early 1960s), VG condition, England. 4. Messiaen, Turangalila symphony, 2 LP Box set, Beroff piano, Loriod ondes martenot (don’t think I’ve ever heard this instrument), LSO, Previn, 1978, EMI HMV SLS5117, near mint. England. A stereo/quadraphonic recording.
Total cost $8 - not too bad at all!

Some good scores there! Great substantial record shelves too. What about cleaning? Do you have ultrasonic or vacuum cleaners &etc?
I find I'm holding back from playing some op shop results beyond a few seconds, determining that they need a clean. OTOH, a few play really well.

I just see how dirty they look, and then if not too bad will just give a quick go in the vac machine. Play, and then determine if it needs more, as in another vacuum. I might give them a go in my DIY US cleaner if they're worthwhile, and I'm doing a batch.
Most of those are WRC releases, some looking barely played, so quick vac has been enough.

Thanks for that, Citroen
I too intend to make a DIY US cleaner, have accumulated some parts already.

Found this in the local Salvo store I still can't find that CD I'm sure I had, held in my hands, but then I can't find my bright LED torch either!
Citroen, at 50c. might it have been worth it just to be able to share later as a gift? ;- OTOH, which Salvation store is it at? ;=}) Maybe I can replace my missing one, if it's not too far away, depending on condition. It'd cost many times more to post!
Cheers!

Not strictly an op-shop but boy-oh-boy, an opportunity I never thought I'd see. Kind of Blue, a genuine 1959, US Columbia 6-eye, mono, deep-groove pressing. It was in RG AKL on the rare wall, marked rough - and for someone more used to say digital, it is. To me, it's just old. Their in-store turntables use stereo carts and while crackly in places, I knew it would sound better at home through my mono cart and phono-stage. It certainly does. I am very happy with how it sounds. As many of you will appreciate, Columbia made such great pressings that the vibrancy of the sounds and performance skills shine brightly through the slight halo of 63 years of crackle. The horns are punchy, there are bass-fills I never knew existed, new little vibrato-trills on the ends of Miles's solos. A slight once-over with the eraser and almost all the ringwear came off the back cover, too. These are freely available on ebay but you can't audition them first and this was only $140. I'm well happy with that! The bucket list just got shorter. (No, not Wayne)

This thread needs photos. I've bought stuff off Ebay and Discogs that were graded with poetic licence.

As John Peel astutely said: "Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, 'Listen, mate, *life* has surface noise." I have a very clean LP of this (also available on CD and cassette):
So it's fun to watch a reaction when the very quiet clean Snakefinger "Reptology" guitar track is followed by "Life Cycle" ... by Bar, er B.Singer. (It would sound the same on a CD, but is much more fun on a previously quiet spinning LP! Sudden surface noise! And wait for it, violent mistracking at the end.;=}) )
This is lined up to "Life Cycle".
But IMHO opinion it's worthwhile checking out the whole album. From Fred Frith in the first track to the Machete Ensemble Of S.F. playing Medicine Man on side A - then side B, where the above are from.
I think I bought it new.

It really is great how a mono cart can bring a mono lp to life, cf a mono switch., especially on older mono lps.
