Went there yesterday. On all my visits to these sort of places, I have a fairly fixed want list in mind - reasonably priced copies of - Jennifer Warnes, The Well John Lee Hooker, The Healer Billy Braggs & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue Vol 1 had both the above, bought new a while ago, and it seems I sold them in 2010! Now I want them back. Neil Young, Greendale (somehow I missed out on this when first released) And of course I always come away dissapppinted. However, I did "splash out" at Real.Groovy and bought a new Fat Possum issue of John Lee - "Alone 2",, and a $2 copy of Randy Newman "Little Criminals". I find looking through the totally haphazardly arranged cheap 2nd hand records at RG too much of a mission, especially with parking charges mounting.

In Mt Eden Op shop, found for $1 each... From a junk shop in Royal Oak (wish I had time to explore here as there were shelves and shelves and boxes and boxes all shoved, into an alcove virtually inaccessible) Grapelli - just one of those things Grapelli and Menuhin - Top Hat, songs made famous by Fred Astaire, arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Thanks to sub for reminding me of my local op shops. Picked up from the Mt Eden Red Cross for $1 an excellent copy of Chopin 26 Preludes, Martha Argerich (Deutsche Grammophon). I offered $20 as a donation for it but she wouldn't take it! "Just buy more of our stuff", so grabbed a couple more lps that I didn't particularly need/want (Menuhin/Grappelli, Monteverdi, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Verdi Royal Oak junk shop $2 eachThere were at least half a dozen boxes of mainly classical music, along with a splattering of the usual Nana, Kamahl et al. A few 78's as well. Had a bit of a rummage and picked up a few classical finds: 1. Britten's War Requiem (looked mint but plays slightly noisey) - been looking for this on vinyl for ages 2. Beethoven String Quartets - Hungarian Quartet (Vols 2, 3 and 4) - damned if I could find vol 1 The playing is SUPERB, which easily makes up for the poor mastering/sound quality (albeit quiet and noise free). 3. Shostakovich String Quartets - BORODIN Quartet, Vol 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Where oh where was that Vol 3 with Quartet 4 & 5!? I search hi and lo but came up short....WRC mint copies Sounds better than my CD copy. Plus half a dozen or so Bartok/Shostakovich/Deutsche Grammophon lps.

Haven't had much time for Op Shopping lately. Visited the Kerikeri ones last week first time in a while. Nice score, all look mint -
Louis Armstrong, "Memorial", CBS S66247, double LP set featuring recordings from 1926 to 1955, electronically processed for stereo, looks like pressed Holland; Benny Goodman and the Great Vocalists, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Clark, Johnny Mercer, etc, RCA Camden INT 1021, mono,1969; Dean Martin, "Swinging Down Yonder", MFP50066, electronically processed for stereo, no dates, made in Holland; General Lafayette - Love is a Rhapsody, Plaza Records UK, PZA A001, no dates given.
I have played all the above, lovely silent surfaces after a light clean, and mostly fine performances.
Martin, Albinoni, JS Bach, Purcell, Schmidt, Pieces for Trumpet & Organ, Falentin trumpet, Heiniger organ, originally on Gallo label, this copy World Record Club NZ 1977, WR2066.

Quick visit to a couple of the locals today, getting harder to find great pop/rock and jazz LPs, but added to my classical collection -
Britten (been a fan of his since first getting seriously into the hobby) Saint Nicolas, Robert Tear. Kings College Choir, & Academy of St Martins in the Fields EMI STZ 1067, NZ pressing 1970. “Green Autumn” traditional music of Ireland Scotland & England, Diane Hamilton on harpsichord, Greenbays Recording GR 711 a Chicago pressing 1982. Piano Trios by Dvorak Op90, Smetana Op15, by the Haydn Trio, Telefunken 6,42352AW, West Germany pressing 1979. Brahms, Violin and Double Concertos, Oistrakh, Rostropovirtch, Cleveland Orch. Szell, originally issued by Capitol Records 1970, but this is a double boxed set by World Record Club STZ 1079-1/2. All the above cost $2 each! Mozart, The Symphonies, boxed sets Vols 5,6&7 (I already have Vols 1-4) by The Academy of Ancient Music, Schroder & Hogwood, on Loiseau-Lyre label circa 1983, each boxed set for $2 each! Time for the US RCM to spring into action.

Back from my annual Easter trip to Tauranga. Visited many op shops, and also the Lions annual book fair. Ended up with 43 albums, total of 53 LPs including box sets. Will be added to the pile waiting attention of the US RCM.
Mixed lot, mostly classical recordings, but a good selection of jazz and a sprinkling of classic rock.
Jazz includes albums by - Oscar Peterson x 2, Artie Shaw x2, Herbie Mann, Stephan Grappelli, Dutch Swing College Band, Bix Beiderbecke. Rock - Clapton, BeeGees, Dr Hook. Easy listening - Judy Garland/Nelson Riddle, Sinatra, Elaine Paige, Belafonte, and a sound track - Room With a View. Classical includes - Brendel/Beethoven piano sonatas, Handel box set/Concerto Grossi, Beethoven box set/Sonatas for violin and piano, Tribute to Sir Michael Tippet/2 lp set, Britten/Rape of Lucretia, plus others featuring Te Kanawa, Pavarotti.
All up cost around $25 - all checked for blemishes prior to purchase so after a clean all should be near perfect.
For a further $10 also scored six CDs, including a 4xdisc set of Fleetwood Mac “25 Years”, Krall, Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Enya, and three cassettes - Ottman Liebert, Chuck Mangione, Mozart/Misuko Uchida/Sonatas!

Brendel Beeth sonatas always good, if you like his touch. I like the Philips sound. What soloists for the B'hoven Viol Sonatas?

Brendel Beeth sonatas always good, if you like his touch. I like the Philips sound. What soloists for the B'hoven Viol Sonatas? Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin, Decca D92D5, four lp set from 1977, soloists Askenazy and Perlman - both renowned maestro, should be good. The Handel Concerto Grossi, also a four lp set, on Decca SDDB 294-7, 1968 recordings by Academy of St Martins in the Fields, Marriner. Will have an ultransonic clean before playing.

The Perlman/Ashkenazy B'hoven series are top shelf, by Penguin's measure. Pressings? Says made in Great Britain, has a black Decca label with the date 1977 on each lp. Not a WRC reissue. Haven’t done a discogs check yet, too many LPs to sort at moment and housemate calling me to the garden for some chores that have got away on us while away!

It is insanely fast! I had to put on Erich's to reacclimatize. I was cooking at the time and the meal was ruined because of the bad, fast Beethoven. Over-beaten, tough gnocchi. Bad Carlos!

On black Decca ffss labels. Googled to get an idea of value, a set sold on eBay uk for £69.90 sterling in December last year! Discogs give asking prices between $30 and $40.

Didn’t find any LPs on my foraging today, but I think I made a good score on the following CDs - 1. Living stereo reissue in SACD Bartok Concerto for orch, music for strings percussion and celesta DTS793, Reiner/Chicago SO, 2. Living stereo reissue, SACD, Dvorak New world symphony and other masterworks, DTS789, Reiner/Chicago SO, 3. DGG FC0080, the originals reissue using original image bit processing, Beethoven Symphonies 6 & 5, Vienna PHIL/Bohm, 4. As above, 459 433-2, Beethoven the complete violin Sonatas Vol1 (2 cd set), Kempff/Menuhin 5. DGG 471 349-2, Beethoven violin concerto/Romances, New York PhIl/Masur/Mutter 6. PentaTone PTC 5186 341, SACD, Chopin,The Two Piano Concertos, Gulbenkian Orch/Foster/Sa Chen 7. Sony SACD FCO724, Schumann, Op6 & Op 12, Perahia. 8. Jiesheng Record Co, 100317, HDCD, Bach, St Matthew Passion, Munich Orch/Richter - clearly a Chinese reissue as apart from title everything else is in Chinese. Most of the cases have a sticker or stickers on them featuring presumably Chinese writing. All look mint, and paid only .50c each for them! Total of $4. Haven’t played any yet.

great score ! what opshop has such treasures St Johns op shop Kerikeri. They usually have a small stock of LPs, also .50c each, to forage through, but from time to time a local art school buys everything the have in bulk, then make arty things out of them! I suppose it helps to get rid of the dross!

Thanks to OwenY for alerting me to this performer. Found a mint looking copy of a world record club issue of Tchaikovsky/Sibelius violin concertos. Featuring Kyung-Wha Chung, LSO/Previn. A 1970 recording originally on Decca label. 48 years ago, I wonder if she is still performing. She looks very young here. Cost - $2. Haven’t played it yet, waiting for a spin on the Ultrasonic RCM. Will have to wait as out of antistatic inner sleeves and Southbound Records web site down for repair at moment.

Excellent, I have a WRC copy too. She was 19 when she recorded that w Previn - not the most dynamic Decca recording, but legendary performance, young & fearless. Keep an eye open for a later recording of the Tchaik Conc she recorded again 12 yrs later - but coupled with the lovely Mendelssohn Conc this time. Decca Digital but OK

Getting harder to find anything decent at op shops lately - people seem to be thinking their LPs are worth money and list them for silly prices on TradeMe!
Picked up a few -
Glen Gould, Mozart Piano sonatas, v3, On Columbia masterworks label US pressing Vivaldi, four seasons, have several versions of this, but this one I do not have, featuring Menuhin on violin, Camerata Lysy, emi 1982, Made in GB. Ryan’s Daughter, the soundtrack, Jarre, mgm Records US pressing Kim Carnes, mistaken identity, emi 1981, either nz or Australian pressing Bream and Williams, Live, RCA, US pressing.
Interestingly, in the priced record box at the Hospice, Kerikeri, were a number of laserdiscs, priced at $5 each. The covers were mint, looked like new. About 10 of them. All except one were movies. Noted Kiri sings Mozart, and a double disc set of Forest Gump, sorry didn’t take note of the other titles. Any one into laserdisc should give them a call!
