Some very nice tables. How do you get on for parts if something dies?

Some very nice tables. How do you get on for parts if something dies? There is usually someone around who can fix things if they break! I bought my Yamaha YP-D9 from Bruce at Stereoscope a bit over a year ago. He had acquired it with speed control problems, fixed it up and put it on the market. I spotted it on his shelf when I collected an amp he had been working on for me. Fell in lust with it, researched it on line, went back and bought it. The photo on my first post above was taken not long after I bought it, so here is a new photo showing it now has a Jelco H-28 Headshell fitted with the DL-103R. Having two Headshells will make swapping carts in and out much easier. web hosting images free

many of the old tables use discrete components which can repaired. the trick is finding a repairer with the requisite skills. see pix of my sp10 at gennlab www.gennlab.com/technics_sp10mk2.htmllater models like the sp15 crammed all the essentials onto bespoke ICs. if these fail you have a turntable shaped paperweight.

Bloody hell Michael, that's a big bucket of parts to spin an lp.

Now that's one good looking SP10!

Bloody hell Michael, that's a big bucket of parts to spin an lp. big contrast to a clockwork motor and rubber band there's so many guys like artisan fidelity above, rebuilding classic DDs that you need a scorecard to keep track.

Have heard a few nightmare stories over the years of these things not being able to be repaired. Luckily most of them seem to be fairly well made and reliable. Only issue I've had myself was with a Kenwood KD5100 where the auto return arm refused to function properly. Not a great deal to go wrong on a belt drive by comparison...

I think Michael's has only needed to be repaired twice since he got it!

Not exactly sure that is a recommendation, how long has he had it ? My Gyro is 36 years old and hasn't failed me once. Kenwood is probably much the same vintage but I bought it second hand, had it maybe 10 years: no faults thus far, though to be honest it only gets occasional use. I wouldn't be expecting good quality gear to fail as long as it is reasonably cared for and serviced appropriately.

Yeah, I think I actually dodged a bullet with that one, stress wise.
But on the other hand it was sold for a very very good price, so even with repair costs I'm sure it still make for a wonderful TT that will now last for decades to come.

Probably like houses in Auckland: If you think you paid too much for it, wait a couple of weeks and it will look like a Bargain.

Analogy doesn't work in this case as Michael definitely didn't pay too much for it.

Some very nice tables. How do you get on for parts if something dies? This is can be a significant issue. Tables like the SP10 & Kenwood L-07D have exceedingly complex servo speed control circuits. The L-07D, in particular, is prone to dying electronics, from what I have seen - although there was at least one expert restorer in USA to whom many have sent their L-07D controller unit - unfortunately that webpage (Unofficial Kenwood L-07D Direct Drive Turntable) appears to have gone? (One of the reasons I think why the above L-07D tonearm became an orphan )

I think Michael's has only needed to be repaired twice since he got it! My SP25 continues to spin nicely despite being shunted around various flats in my Uni days, moving around NZ and to oz and back, never had to go near a Tech .. ( touch wood).. and the ancient Akai AP206C here.. for swmbo use as it auto returns.. has never missed a beat either.

sp15 had electronic pitch control with fancier digital readout. scan from 1979 technics catalogue also found this little gem... harry pearson on the sp10 from tas #4 1974 !

I'm very happy with what I have at present and don't feel the need to chase this dragon right to the end - but a decent DD and preferably a Technics will have to come into the picture to compliment and contrast my current belt drive at some stage. Awesome tables for the coin.
