A 'Five Star' reviewed lspkr (eg What HiFi) - but can they rock?

A 'Five Star' reviewed lspkr (eg What HiFi) - but can they rock? Well my current Tannoys were five star rated and one of their speakers of the year so I'm not sure how much I trust their judgement in my case. Didn't play any hard rock, closest was Two Faced Love(Richard Thompson) which zipped along pretty well but did lack the absolute top end energy of the Tannoys(which I find a little tiring at times) Lovely speakers physically, wonderful mid range , good bass for a small box, just a little unsure about the top end with something Led Zep or Metallica. ps , If you have a good set of phones handy have a good listen to the track below, crap video, great sound but it's definitely not folk music. IMO Thompson's best live band with son Teddy on backing vocals and the great Danny Thompson(Pentangle etc) on a proper bass.

I was reading the Absolute Sound about the Sonus Faber Auditor M, very nice review of them So are you going to buy them? Who know's Deano, dammed certain I can't make up my mind. If I'd managed a home demo that would confirm things either way but after my dissatisfaction with some aspects of my current speakers I'm reluctant to go deeper down the hole. Plus, don't know if I can be bothered going through the hassles of trying to sell/ship the Tannoys on TM. Probably have to have a final clearance of some more headphone products as well and maybe let some box sets go to cover finances. This wasn;t in the 2019 budget ;( All in all a mole hill is turning into a self made mountain. Will mull things over with a nice drive through Central Otago tomorrow. Dont dare discuss it with my wife or I'll end up in the Clutha weighed down with some large rocks,

Been rediscovering much of my alt country collection and currently trawling through several Rodney Crowell cds. I think the SF's would go down a treat there.

How come you cant get a home demo of the SF's ? They're in Dunedin and not sure how willing the seller is.

How come you cant get a home demo of the SF's ? Quite...my viewpoint exactly. Cooksferry is a reliable and careful punter. Given the 'investment/risk' due diligence required, a demo by him in his mancave should be mandatory, I would have thought the seller would bend over backwards. Some dealers do themselves no favours...

Since this thread has wandered down a few different paths lets ramble some more. Go back a page and I was muttering about the lack of bass on the Tannoy's, got to the stage where I went and purchased a small sub. Last weekend after I got back from my trip to Dn I refitted the amp and the only thing different was to place it at 90 degrees on the stand from it's previous position. I left the sub disconnected. For whatever reason I suddenly have bass, depth, weight, especially with the TT setup. Buggered if I can explain that away. Listening to some Tindersticks last night and there were a couple of moments were I could feel the deeper notes of what sounded like massed cellos and singer Stuart Staples deep baritone voice sounded really good. At times Staples makes Johnny Cash sound like a soprano. All is still not perfect however, still find the top end a bit excited at times but am playing with a small amount of roll off with the Schiit Loki . The other problem is the tipping point between volume just right and falling off the cliff .Very dynamic surges can make for a painful few seconds listening. It may be that the XT6F is just a bit too much for my small room or the pairing with my amp is not the best..

Jim Smith has some sage words on such interactions, especially room acoustics interaction with speakers. Of course psycho-acoustics come into this too. You've noted before how a snifter or two 'relaxes' the sound. Perhaps a supply of single malt IS the best long-term investment?

The snifter glass was getting bigger each weekend. Maybe time to find a nice Cognac instead, seems to engender more restraint. especially the very expensive stuff. Must take some time to delve deeper into Smith's book. There are a couple of speaker companies on You Tube that offer some good advice on the subject of rooms and placement, which is great if you actually have room.

Now a Sonus Faber owner, picking them up this weekend. While I didn't get a home demo hopefully I've gathered enough info from the reviews online and my trip to Dunedin to make this the correct choice. Think I'd be kicking myself if I didn't take the chance. Beginning to realise that I should have taken more notice of wise advice offered earlier in this thread and spent more time investigating smaller stand mounts for my room rather than going with floor standers. I can hear lots of potential in the Tannoys but in the end feel they just aren't right for my space.

Franco Serblin is no longer with them, but Sonus Faber is synonymous with aesthetic beauty, quality craftsmanship, nice tonal balance & integration. I'm glad to see that the SF stands are part of the package. I expect you'll spend much enjoyable time plumbing their depths of sonic quality - esp the 'M' model, which I understand denotes a refinement/update of the original design. (They deserve a dedicated new thread please, in due course )
