Hi Cooks, yes Studio 200. An MTM driver arrangement with 2 x 6" inch drivers and a soft dome tweeter in between ? About 6 feet tall ported and biwirable. New were around the 6k mark iirc. Cant remember the rest of my set up at the time: may have been ARC SP9 and D70ii, but had them sounding spectacular in my room at the time. Room was lightly furnished, 6m x 5m from memory ?

It's the size that's a killer for me. Would like to hear them but the shop doesn't seem that interested in wiring them up.

Proac, IMHO, make some of the best loudspeakers in the world. Took a pair home for demo once, can't remember the model - it was one up from the studios - and they were really excellent, but not sufficienty better than the Mission 753s I then owned to warrant the $5K outlay (mid 90s price).
I later heard top of the range Proacs at a hifi show in Auckland, demoed by Paul Quilter. They put everything else I have heard into a distant 2nd place, but way out of my price range.
I did buy a pair of Proac Tablettes in early 00s, and loved them, but managed to blow the woofer on one with my Plinius SA100! They were later relegated to use as rear speakers when I got into 5.1 surround sound.
However, if you go stand mount way, the KEF LS50s I now own are streets ahead of the Proac Tablettes, and depending how you place them they do deliver nice clean bass, but not the trouser ruffling sort!
If the Proac Studio 200 are priced at $2K at your retailer, then I wouldn't hesitate in having a serious listen to them.

Would be old stock by now if they are new, although at 2K i'm suspecting they are 2nd hand ? Would be too much for your room IMO.

Sat in the shop window for some weeks and I thought they'd been sold. Way too big for my room although I could probably sleep in one if things got tough. I'd have to have a closer look but maybe some of the speaker surrounds were looking a little iffy. Will have a better look when I go in to arrange the demo on the Klipsch next week.

Ahh, I had forgotten there are two Studio models, the 100 and 200. I have seen and heard the 100, and it is a medium size spkr. Also should have realised that at $2K this pair would have been 2nd hand rather than NOS. doesn't really sound like they would fit in Cooks room.

Have yet to hear the LS50 but its definately on my wish list. The studio range had foam speaker surrounds,i'd never seen them rot out but they were new back when I had them. Studio 100 are the 2 way stand mount. Nice with valve amps. The response range is where they prozacs start getting really good, although i've always had a soft spot for the Tablette 50.

I'm not sure of current pricing for the LS50, but they used to be well under $2K a pair. Paid $1200 for mine. (Or was it $1299?) Initially a bit disappointed. They had to be better than my faithful Mission 753s. With my then set up, they were not. Had my current sources - Yamaha YP-D9 TT, Denon 103R, with Linn Pretek/Powertek producing 50wpc. 50wpc did not cut it - with that set up the Missions had a slight edge. Later acquired a Plinius 2100i amp (100wpc), and immediately the LS 50s came on song. Changed speaker cable to BlackLink, and a further improvement in upper midrange and treble. Then scored a Plinius 8150, and "oh my God" the sound was almost perfect. The 8150 is away for refurbishing at the moment. Had been told the LS50s require a bit of welly up them, and my experience backs that up. But elsewhere on this forum is a post extolling the synergy using a 40wpc NAD amp with the LS50s. No, they do not give kick in the chest bass, but the bass is tuneful, fast, and compared to the floorstanding 753s there is really nothing missing. Have mine 2.4m apart, 300mm from rear wall, and 1.5m from side walls. On solid Sound Creation sand filled stands, slightly toed in - although facing straight ahead is ok too, as the uni-q set up enables you to listen in to the sound stage wherever you sit!

Looks like the Klipsch home demo may not be happening. Called into the shop tonight to finalise dates and it appears the speakers may not now be available , or if they are, only for one day that works for me. A bit disappointed as I thought I had things sorted for the 3 days holiday I have shortly , failing that there's only the odd couple of hours here and there over a weekend. Since the salesman isn't showing much enthusiasm I'll probably move on and follow through on some other brands like the Tannoys. Now if these were a little closer to my budget I'd probably buy them for looks alone. One classy item in the room....no, sorry, almost forgot the Yamamoto HA-02, that looks pretty nice. www.listeningpost.co.nz/Second-Hand/Second-Hand-Speakers/Sonus-Faber-Guarneri-Memento-Bookshelf-Speakers-__I.174038__C.19313__N.25869

i've found stat/hybrids can work in smaller rooms whereas pure stats need more space to breathe but the speaker-listener distance is crucial to get the disparate drivers to sound coherent.

So possibly not a great idea if you're pretty much locked into a space without much room to experiment with placement.

Listening Post ChCh has a pair for $4000. I've heard a pair in a small living room, but open plan to another space. The speakers were positioned about two feet from the front wall, further from the side walls but there was plenty of room behind the listening position (far from rear wall) unlike my set up. The room was very well damped with lots of furniture and soft furnishings. They worked extremely well to my surprise in that space, as I thought they would need to have more open space around them. I find that in my small space my ML Summit's only about 8 feet away give me a near field listening experience not too dissimilar to headphones

Have passed this on to a friend who might sell some Klipsch to make contact. Always been a fan of 15" bass & horns so I am biased ;-)

That's a shame. You've got to wonder at times if the brick n mortar industry isn't a bit of a suicide risk. You'd think they'd be bending over backwards at this point in their existence? The Klipsch are one I've always wanted to own myself - though they'd realistically tick none of my boxes. Hell, the visual appeal is enough for me that I'd have a pair sitting in the room as a purely decorative piece. Good luck on the hunt... Hey, sub, what happened to the 753s? Always wanted a pair of those...

Hey, sub , what happened to the 753s? Always wanted a pair of those... Still have them. Planning to build on a tv room and will use as them as fronts in a 5.1 HT set up. Awesome speakers - owned them for about 20 years, and demoed many Spkrs over that time thinking to up grade, some were marginally better, but considering the price difference the 753s stayed. Ironic that a pair of KEFLS50s I paid $1299 (on special) for did finally beat them - again only marginally in upper midrange and treble. there was a pair of 753 Freedoms listed on TM a while back - asking $600 and never got a bid! The Freedoms were said to be a bit more refined in the treble - but have never heard them.

Hell, the visual appeal is enough for me that I'd have a pair sitting in the room as a purely decorative piece. Good luck on the hunt... I was disappointed that the store owner hadn't made any sort of effort to demonstrate the Klipsch to their best. Having to ask for a chair and not being able to get within a reasonable distance to the speakers(too near or too far due to display table) didn't put me in the best frame of mind. Maybe he wrote me down as a time waster, who would know. Think he's more interested in home installations . I know that I put as much, if not more, into selling a $120 crash helmet as a $1000 one. It's all money. I haven't always had good out comes with HiFi shops. Once waited half an hour in one Chch shop to demo a pair of headphones. Had $800 cash in my pocket to buy them but after a total lack of interest went and got a pair for around half price from the States. Of all the gear in my rooms the only item I've had a home demo on was the Project RS phono stage. Everything else has been a blind punt .

Does JR have a demo room any more. He's working from his farmlet I believe. Saw that mailer but want to move away from that trad speaker box if possible. You'll have to accept part of the blame

Cooks im happy for you to home Demo our Elac BS 403 or our Elac BS 243.3 PM if interested to chat about the logistics Cheers Thanks for the offer Deano but at this stage I'm aiming for some sort of floor stander rather than a stand mount. Also contemplating something that's a bit more left field with regards to speaker, ie Klipsch, Tannoy, Martin Logan. I could end up with a pile of crap sound but sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith. Appreciate all the ideas that have been put forward. Plenty of thinking and reading to do.
