RNZ Ballet this Fri-Sat-Sun: " A stripped down, elemental retelling of Swan Lake, with the agony and ecstasy of Tchaikovsky’s original score at its heart,... this is a Swan Lake for our time. " Yep, I'll be in for this one.

Footnote NZ Dance company, presented yesterday on their Facebook page this short (30 min) creation - " Mass Solitude (群孤) is a movement meditation on connection and isolation. " - Topical themes. Available to watch on Youtube until 15 May. " This work was developed in China, in 2018, and was built from observations about being surrounded by community while also in isolation as an individual ”. " A collaboration between Footnote New Zealand Dance and Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Mass Solitude was created in Guangzhou in 2018. The work premiered as part of our Hemispheres season touring in China in 2018 and then New Zealand in February 2019. Both tours received fantastic reviews from audiences and media. " This is excellent, I found tai-chi-like & meditative in its mass chroeography & its vaguely Eastern instrumentation & taiko-like rhythms. And again, the lighting is evocative & simple.

As mentioned above, IMHO the APO (Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra) has the best streamed sound quality of the online concerts that I've sampled this 'lockdown'. Yesterday the APO streamed another recorded feature, which is still available from the APO Facebook page - www.facebook.com/aporchestra/videos/569951633627056/?v=569951633627056APO Encore Livestream: Unwrap Mozart’s Clarinet ConcertoThis is of particular interest because the APO's presenter takes listeners through the musical structure of this piece, one of Mozart's greatest compositions. This recording is quite recent, from June 2019. Whilst you don't get to hear the piece in continuous entirety, it's great learning for those who wish to learn about classical music. Australian clarinettist & his instrument are both pretty impressive too.

Igor Levit to live-stream Erik Satie’s Vexations
Thursday, May 28, 2020
The 20-hour piano piece will be performed live this Saturday (and Sunday!)
No stranger to performing some of the towering epics of the piano repertoire, Igor Levit will live-stream Erik Satie’s monumental Vexations on Saturday, May 30 at 2pm (CET), a performance that will be broadcast by The New Yorker and Der Spiegel, as well as on Levit’s own Twitter and Instagram accounts, @igorpianist. The concert is being given to raise awareness for the plight of artists worldwide.
‘It has always been a strong wish of mine to be able to perform Erik Satie's Vexations,’ Levit said. ‘While written in the 19th century, this piece was revolutionary thanks to its atonal harmony. The few notes - a theme and two variations - fit on just one sheet. The 840 repetitions herald early on a future of aesthetic repetitiveness. The sheer duration of over 20 hours of Vexations doesn't feel like a “nuisance” to me, as the title would suggest, but rather a retreat into silence and humility. It reflects a feeling of resistance. That's why it feels right to play the Vexations right now. My world and that of my colleagues has been a different one for many weeks now and will probably remain so for a long time. Vexations represents for me a silent scream.’
Igor Levit is financing the project via the funds from the Gilmore Award granted to him in January 2018.

Familiar of course with Satie's Gymnopédies, but not the Vexations. Should be enlightening.

Familiar of course with Satie's Gymnopédies, but not the Vexations. Should be enlightening. Yes, I'd never heard of Vexations until just then. Start 1 am our time?
I love the little Satie I've heard, I have physically 1 or 2 "proper" LPs, and then in a flac collection also ImproviSatie by Michael Gees.
Trailer here (need to get through the intro?)
There's a nice full album of Gymnopedies 1, 2, 3 (60 min) here:
Regards!
