Enjoyed Fred Hersch's autobiography Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz "Hersch’s prodigious talent as a sideman—a pianist who played with the giants of the twentieth century in the autumn of their careers, including Art Farmer and Joe Henderson"

A couple more I've noted... Concertgebouw - Amsterdam - has unlocked its past concerts for enthusiasts to watch and enjoy. Royal Opera House - London - on their YouTube channel, are streaming recorded weekly ballets or operas, then making them available on demand after the first stream.

RNZB A Midsummer Night’s Dream A Co-Production between the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Queensland Ballet Wow, just finished watching this, great production. An example of how modern ballets are such a visual feast, great set & lighting, great costuming. And the dancers... looked excellent to me - especially 'Puck' (crowd favourite) & Hermia & Helena. (Maybe the 2 lead dancers tonight seemed to lack a little physical stature - but hey, I'm no aficionado.) Mendelssohn's score nicely delivered by the NZSO. As Citroen says, will be repeated on Sat pm & Sun am - recommended. (Save yourself a $50-100 ticket & you get bonus close-ups you won't get in the theatre.) Some screenshots:

Oh, I should mention that the 'costuming' of other cast members was quite 'modern' - ie. wearing pants & dresses, a semi-modern-designed ballet.

Last night, I checked out the Berlin Philharmoniker's 'digital concert hall' - ie their video archive of BPO concerts, free of charge for 30 days.. This is really good, recommended.. Video quality, sound quality, cinematography, are all top shelf. I was especially impressed with the camera work, the attention to detail, eg syncing instrument shots to the musical score. Angles & close-ups that you wouldn't see in live concert. I selected Herbert von Karajan conducting Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 'The Pathetique'. From '73, the sound is excellent (USB off my PC through the Khadas DAC & tube headphone amp & Sennheiser HD 6XX/650). Wide bandwidth, resonant & sweet. I didn't realise that the great man would conduct pretty much the entire concert (4 movements, 45 mins) with his eyes closed

In retrospect Rattle says, “I felt that I was finding my voice on that day.” Mahler’s multifaceted work was also on the programme when Sir Simon gave his last concert in the Philharmonie as the orchestra’s chief conductor. The wheel comes full circle."

BPO have got v Karajan, Abbado & Rattle tenures as chief conductor, all archived. 1966 through to present. No Furtwangler, unless I am mistaken.

And as Andrea points out NOT a concert but a PRAYER, for hope and Italy.

RNZB Cinderella: Yes, great set design again. I had a little nitpick this time - this 2012 recording didn't quite have the sound quality of the 2020 A Midsummer Night's Dream, eg. a touch 'raucous' on Prokofiev's brass & generally not so mellifluous HF or warm LF as the 2020 production. And the camera work has come a long way in 8 years - as said, the many close-up angles in the later filming (as pics above) gives you something here that you won't get in the theatre. I see that this youtube full video is still available as of today (hit Play button & then the youtube link below):

As mentioned above, The Metroplolitan Opera in NYC has been broadcasting operas from its archives nightly. I'm not a deep opera fan, but I do like some of the favourites for the music mainly (Carmen, La Traviata...) Musically, I like a lot of Italian opera. Broadcasting right now (Fri 19:30pm NY EDT time, Sat 11:30am NZT) is Puccini's popular Madama Butterfly. The way it works is that each broadcast is available for 23 hours (eg. until Sun 10:30am NZT, in this case). This is the link - metoperafree.brightcove.services/?videoId=6147522642001John Cargher (author of How to Enjoy Opera Without Really Trying) says: " One of the most famous of all operas... decidedly soppy romantic, but with glorious music. "
