Wow, just wow. A quick note - try to catch the Met Opera’s ‘Madama Butterfly’. The stage design is so good, minimalist, breathtaking. Puccini’s music, Cio-Cio San... It’s on till tomorrow 10:30am NZT.

Thank god for the subtitles, which you don't normally get when live. Thanks, I forgot to mention the subtitles. (And the plot synopses.) Italian language too, is nice sung in opera (vs German ). Some screenshots. Bold design, bold colours. Clever use of a ramped stage, reflective surfaces, side/rear lighting, sliding shoji screens & a puppet..)

One World: Together At Home Special to Celebrate COVID-19 Workers I've caught only snippets (of these snippets) but the sense of worldwide online 'communal connectivity', is enjoyable, surprisingly If nothing else, a quick collage of global popular music today. A few highlights in the the 2 hour segment - The Killers, Christine and The Queens, Lady Gaga, Stevie (Wonder), Camila Cabello, The Rolling Stones Also - Paul McCartney, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift. Not to mention Lang Lang, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga & Andrea Bocelli performing together(!) - OMG.

My disappointments were - Billie Eilish (just out of bed(?), un-professional), Taylor Swift (looked miserable, poor video & SQ), McCartney (ugh that organ), Elton (no surprise, torturing a piano. Him & Lang Lang). Lady Gaga - all class. Charlie Watts - air-drums, cool dude. And that Christine French girl...

Richard Thompson: A bit glitchy but I enjoyed his facebook livestream this morn. (It's still up on his FB page.) Especially his guitar work (would have liked to have seen him play electric too).

I thought Charlie without drums was just sad...

Watched most of these short dance pieces. Nice band score, robust army band instrumention, especially Passchendaele. Loved the horns & brass, quite moving really, the Passchendaele score & choreography.

Unfortunately I'll miss most of the Met Opera La Traviata livestream tonight. I caught the opening act this norn & aside from the Verdi's gorgeous music, get an eyeful of this Met Opera marvellous, surrealist opening set. It's clear to me that the Met Opera is a first rate, well-funded & well supported company - $$$ in America, I'll try to view it On Demand later on, if I can.

You're right, glitchy rubbish sound on YouTube - better on their facebook page, as they mention.. Enjoying this a lot - despite old iphone front camera fuzzy optics (& reversed image!) - the warmth of feeling, these guys rock in their own quiet way And despite the rain!

Not a concert as such, but a listening session and discussion "Join World Circuit for our first ever album listening party - we'll be listening to ‘Rejoice’ - the very special new collaborative album between Tony Allen, the legendary drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat, and Hugh Masekela, the master trumpet player of South African jazz.
This special listening session will also feature in-depth conversations about the record between Tony Allen, producer Nick Gold, and Mabusha Masekela (Hugh's nephew and spokesperson).
Tune in to World Circuit’s YouTube or Facebook page tomorrow Tuesday April 28th at 6pm BST / 7pm CEST / 1pm EDT to join in.
Live links will be posted just before the stream starts: worldcircuit.lnk.to/RejoiceSession If you can’t make it, don’t worry - it’ll be available to watch again after the session finishes!"

A heads up about the APO - Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra: The APO are streaming 'Encore Livestream' concerts every Thursday, 8pm - from the APO Facebook page. (As far as I can see, the video remains available on the page - all week?) Last night I caught some of the concert (Weber Clarinet Concerto + Beethoven Symph 5) & the video & sound quality are very good - in fact, the sound quality was near the best I've heard online recently, maybe even better than I've heard live in the same Akld Town Hall. In particular, the Weber concerto (from 2018) sounded exceptional (bandwidth, warmth, upper range sweetness, openness, transparency, instrumental definition...) - slightly better SQ I thought, than the Beethoven Symphony (from 2016, which also happened to be a little quieter in level). (The Berlin Philharmonic streamed recordings sound more impressive, arguably better - if you like a super-clear, close-miked approach.) Notes: - You can always tell a lot about live recorded SQ from the sound of audience applause. - Check out the great little interlude piece which was recorded by members of the orchestra, individually in 'lockdown' at their homes & 'livestreamed' together. Excellent sound, eg. the flautist in her bathroom ). See middle pic below. Again, many camera angles & close-ups that you won't get in concert...

RNZ Ballet this Fri-Sat-Sun: " A stripped down, elemental retelling of Swan Lake, with the agony and ecstasy of Tchaikovsky’s original score at its heart,... this is a Swan Lake for our time. "
