So watcha got? Show us yer analog rig. Be loud. Be proud... I've just bolted this puppy on; Supex SDX-2000 HOMC And damn does she make my system sing. Real synergy at work here for such a simple and modest set-up as mine. An open window to the sound. Sheer bliss.

Hi all - Good luck with the new forum Owen. Michell Gyrodec + Audiomods Series V + Lyra Delos + Aqvox phono stage pictures upload

Thanks harvey & welcome! The Aqvox phono has always been of interest - a fully balanced design & incorporating the "Neumann Time Constant" (an extra lift at the top end, ~50khz) to compensate for the reported EHF roll-off in Neumann cutting lathes up there. NZ's Allen Wright (RIP, Vacuum State Gmbh) promoted this idea too. I think DartTZeel, Whest also incorporate it in their phono stages. How would you characterise the sound of the Aqvox?

Hi Owen, It's difficult for me to say much about the sonic signature of the Aqvox, I don't have much to compare it to as it replaced a Cambridge Audio 651P which was my first phono stage after getting back in to vinyl. Having said that I have always found it to be very open, detailed and revealing but perhaps a little clinical and needing the right cables to bring it to life, a tubed preamp definitely helped too. My system is fully balanced from start to finish, I didn't set out to do it that way but after buying the Aqxox I wanted to make the most of its talents so I guess in a way I built my system around it. I have no idea if it sounds any better than one that isn't balanced, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Here's my system, still unchanged for a year or so. Oracle Delphi II with custom filtered PS, and Sumiko MMT. Currently fitted with a lowly Denon DL110 which sounds much better than it has a right to. Back up TT is Dual 721 for not so flash used records. Usually has Shure V15III installed but currently testing the JVC 4MD-10X Shibata cartridge. My Yarland Pro 88 tube amp ( thanks Ben)which sounds wonderful with upgraded valves. The Chinese can make good gear if they want to. Cheers Graham.

Dual 721 Direct Drive TT - I've got a Dual 701, in storage here. Been meaning to give it a run again. How do you like the 721, Graham?
|
Post by Graham on Jan 24, 2017 20:07:50 GMT 12
Hi Owen IMO the Dual 701/721 turntables are seriously under-rated. This may be due to audiophiles dislike of any automatic features. However the auto features on these and most Duals are completely disconnected from the platter and arm during play so have no influence whatsoever. The powerful direct drive motor is regarded as one of the quietest ever being totally silent with rock steady rpm. The arm is unfashionably light by todays trends but if a cartridge with high compliance is used, as intended, it performs very very well. The only thing I am considering changing is possibly making a better plinth as it is a bit plasticy and cheap looking. However this is just for cosmetic reasons as IMO on a suspended turntable the plinth has little influence on sound or performance. In short I think they are great but like any 30 plus year old machine they need to be serviced to return them to their full potential. Do I sound biased ?? Cheers Graham

That's a bit of a job I imagine, getting inside the SP10 (PSU not so bad). The FR64fx always looks nice. I have an FR64S - which may end up on the SP10.... still thinking on that.
