fiddlesticks research arms always looked nice go silver according to the guy who fixed my sp10 it's not that hard to get into, just need to be careful due to the age of the componentry in these tables now.

neilsan - different arms/carts I know, but what is your feeling about how Direct Drive compares with Idler/rim drive?

Owen. After the usual automatic ttables I started with,I got interested in a Linn. But the Linn was no good in a caravan,so I bought a Rega 3 (still got it) which didn't bounce like a Linn. Soon after I bought the FR and had it on the Rega until I bought a Kenwood KD500,was very happy with it.More motor grunt than the Rega and it sounded better. I started reading about the 301/401's and thought"I've got one of those" (401). Can't remember when or where I got it,very annoying. Made an 18mm mdf plinth. Fitted the FR on it and sold the KD500. Immediately heard a big difference in recordings, especially ones recorded in a busy city with trains underground!Quite surprising the amount of information down low.More dynamic sound. Decided to build a new plinth in 2015 out of bamboo kitchen bench leftovers.3 layers of 35mm each.Bass tighter and the tops sounded more delicate! A friend died 2015 and his family gave me his SL1000,which was a great surprise. So thankful for it!Pulled the bottom off the SP10 and replaced all the electrolytics. Which is fairly easy as the boards are held in place by a few screws and plug into each other,so I did one at a time. First impression of the SP10 was of a deep silence until the music started on quiet LP's.That impression has stayed with me,not that the 401 is noisier! After changing the cable from the SME3 from an early van den Hul to a Mogami (my Antipodes are too big) it does sound more musical and dynamic.I have made up an armboard for the FR but at present I'm happy using either ttable without the hassle of resetting my cartridges, and the SME3 is so easy to set up. My present thinking is that I'm delighted with both direct drive and idler in these 2 quality machines and don't feel any need to upgrade!! PS.Extra large Isonode feet under both ttables also cleans up the bass. Both tables can now wriggle while playing and not skip!

neilsan - oh good, both satisfying TTs, top shelf sound. That obsidian plinth on the SL-1000 is something special & rare, I've not seen one close up.

That EMT eschews a rear (pin)plate in favour of a front (face)plate!
