Having done a minor restoration of a TT for a friend of a friend, I was gifted some RG vouchers before Xmas. I didn't to get to RG's 'outlet store' sale a few weeks (months?) back when they moved to their new premise further up Queen St. So, with a scheduled local electricity power-cut yesterday, I took the morning off & bus'd into town, armed with said vouchers. Currently, RG's vinyl records seem to be mostly new vinyl & selected used ones - so slightly disappointing to not see the usual bargain bins (as if I need another copy of What's New or Aja ). However I have it on good authority that RG are working on opening soon a space upstairs on premises for the s/hand stuff - including new stock I'm told. (That's good because I had the impression that maybe RG were downsizing & getting out of s/h music.) Anyways, a minor haul, bought too much as usual. Nice copies of boring ol' favourites & some new stuff....

Unfortunately, I have no phonostage presently. My Lounge LCR, after some manufacturer upgrades, is on its way USPS from LA to Youshop Seattle, maybe a week or so winging back here.

Good score with the Howe Gelb vinyl Owen. One of my favourites from his rather large catalogue.

haven't you already got multiple copies of the emmylou and bob dylan ? And Paradise and Lunch? Your link in the Beethoven thread has a post with an AU pressing. Let me know how much you're willing to part with it seeing as you've now upgraded.

Good score with the Howe Gelb vinyl Owen. One of my favourites from his rather large catalogue. Yes I was chuffed to see that there, as I must explore his catalogue. Love that Arizona emptiness of the acoustic that he creates/evokes. And of course the gospel choir collaboration hooked me in straight away.... ('Alegrias' has eluded me so far )

haven't you already got multiple copies of the emmylou and bob dylan ? Always looking for nice copies of my favourites. But yes I need to dispose of surplus vinyl The Dylan Blood on the Tracks, I have one US copy. This one is UK pressed. Blue Kentucky Girl, the same - my US copy came from the sadly-now-defunct GEMM site. (Couldn't pass up only $9.95 for this US copy.) Does anyone buy much used vinyl off Discogs? (I've done it only once or twice.)

Postage is usually the killer.

I've picked up a few hard to find lps from Discogs. Only buy from sellers with top feedback. No problems so far.

OK thanks, I've had pretty good % of success so far. Except for one Canadian purchase, which was so expensive for Canadian Airmail that we chose Surface & it too so long (~12 wks) that the feedback placement period expired! Hard to find one seller with multiple desirable records to combine for shipping.

The one I'm really looking forward to hearing is the Bobbie Gentry Live at the BBC disc. A rather forgotten artist & maybe under-acclaimed songwriter & performer. Aside from the legendary & haunting Ode to Billie Joe, her writing describes rural Mississippi upbringing, life & manners, at a time when pop & country music was about psychedelia, Aretha, Beatles, Glen Campbell, etc. She was also one of the first American women to compose & produce her own songs. Definitely also a highpoint for big eyelashes & eye-liner

Good score with the Howe Gelb vinyl Owen. One of my favourites from his rather large catalogue. Agree! Multiple recommendations for this album, so I had to buy a copy - just now off TM. From USA seller Deep Discount $49.12 including delivery. NZ sellers quote $49.99 plus circa $9.90 for delivery. Hope it’s a good one!

Bobbie Gentry: I see that "Ode to Billie Joe" even made it into Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". However, not many will be old enough to remember

For someone from the deep south which is the better store to visit, RG or Southbound. Supposed to chauffeur for my wife around the North Island next year after I retire. Will have a few days in Akld with our daughter. It may come down to which is easiest on public transport as i'm not keen on driving around the city. CHCH is about my limit these days.

Will have a few days in Akld with our daughter. It may come down to which is easiest on public transport as i'm not keen on driving around the city. CHCH is about my limit these days. Both are on main roads - Real Groovy at the top of Queen Street, with limited parking nearby (although they used to advertise free parking in the basement of a nearby building on weekends), and Southbound at top of Symonds street, a major road artery. Parking nearby is almost impossible. Both are on bus routes with stops nearby, but you will have to wait for a local with knowledge of the bus system to advise about which buses to catch - which will depend on where your daughter lives. RG is the bigger store, where you will be left to your own devices when browsing- although obliging young staff will help if asked. Southbound is smaller and usually only has one of the owners in attendance, who are very knowledgeable. RG is sometimes cheaper. If I go to Auckland I try to fit in a visit to both stores!

Its only a 650m 10 minute walk between them now. Real Groovy is quite close to the K Road end of Queen St since its move, and Southbound records 650m further. (Has Southbound Records moved from where it was a couple of years ago? - I remember visiting a while back but not where it is now.)

Paul, they were about 500m further out on Mt Eden Rd but now on Symonds Street, as you say only a short walk from Real Groovy. Flying Out flyingout.co.nz is just off K Road (Pitt St) and only 300m from Real Groovy as well.

My maps faster ...

Haha.
The 13 mins includes the trip to Flying Out. RG to Southbound is only 9 mins.

There's a reason why I try to restrict myself to just one visit to Real Groovy per annum.

OK, Howe Gelb - Gathered 2019
The rest?
I always seem to come up empty handed whenever I go to Real Groovy.
