Well, my mighty Pioneer CT95 died! Been playing up for a while, one of those super decks with everything automatic, and the eject button stopped working. The amount of use it gets not worth fixing, so remedied that by taking the door off, and loading manually. Then the take up capstan stopped and started unspooling tapes.
Too expensive to fix, so bought a Yamaha KX300, was listed by the Listening Post Chch, second hand for $79, which compares favourably with prices being asked elsewhere. Listed with original packaging and as working. Googled for info and found it listed in the top eight 2nd hand cassette decks, so took a punt. I actually remember this deck being reviewed very favourably, probably What Hifi, back in the day.
arrived today, played a couple of commercial tapes, and compares favourably with the Pioneer (when I first bought that deck, couldn’t hear difference between tape and cd) so very happy.
dont use cassette deck often, but have some tapes I cannot find released on cd or lp, plus tape can be free or very cheap at op shops! Found stack in the free bin at local the other day - a stack of some blank tapes, several owner recorded and a couple of commmercial tapes, including dr hook, the doors, Gary Moore and Louis Armstrong. Also use it for listening to the rugby commentary via headphones to save annoying housemate!
