Mikey Fremer, you probably know by now, occasionally likes to do impressions, but he is deadly serious about TTs. Here, the new Technics SL1200G @ US$4k against his reference TT, the Continuum Caliburn, US$52.5k + Swedish Audio Technologies tonearm $US$28k. Both with Lyra's US$9k cartrdige You can d/load the 96/24 tracks on Analog Planet yourself to hear the difference, if any....

"As I said in the video, the audio may or may not be the same and if different, may or may not correspond with the audio (in other words the audio for the SL-1200 may be the Continuum recording and vice-versa..or not!"
what a tease!
I prefer the sound of the first one, if youtube SQ can be relied upon.

(OK, putting myself out there for potential embarrassment here....) Listening to just the youtube in the early quiet this morn upon awaking .... I was surprised that the first playing sounded odd to me, the bells sounded harsh & the piano diffuse, unfocussed, overall hard on the ear & confused. The second sounded better to me, as if they instrumentalists were playing in the same space, the harmonics of the bells more natural & the piano had natural decay. Actually sounded like a nice piece of music!

Ok Haven't listened to it as I don't have an easy means of doing so. but I can't see many potential Continuum owners tossing up as whether to buy a Technics instead ?
So theres a noticeable difference ?

I had a listen to the Songs of the Auvergne tracks (on youtube) & to me.... - on the SL1200G, the voice vibrato & extreme upper harmonics seemed brittle & uncomfortable, unpleasant even. - the Caliburn was not so, smoother & warmer as a result, without the ear being drawn to the upper octaves. Just my take.

Yes indeed - I did notice the warp and/or eccentricity. I still think the fist youtube sounds unnatural in the upper harmonics - maybe shoulda d/loaded the 24/96
