i have a DV TKR which i purchased used from Audiogon a while ago now (7-8yrs). it has not been used extensively during the time i have had it and has performed faultlessly, but i would like to get it checked for wear. is there someone in NZ that people would recommend? if there was someone in chch that would be ideal but don't mind shipping.
i also have a DV 20-XH which came with a tt a long time ago and showed signs of wear so was replaced by the TKR. any ideas what to do with this as i can't see myself needing it again.

You could send the DV20 to Garrott Bros for a retip $300 aud (shibata) and then move on to someone in need.

John at Shore HiFi in Auckland has always done this for me. D John, or his 2IC have checked a few stylii for me, and have been great doing so. Stylus wear is not an exact science but general condition will be given confidently.

after mulling this over, off and on, for the past 6mths, today i posted the TKR to the needle clinic in the USA. andy has a few admirers on various parts of the web, so i thought i would go with him. i have asked he check for wear and damage and then get back to me. he has a reputation for getting things done quickly which is always a bonus. shipping was only $15 but will probably be more coming back.

so today i got an email from andy. he has examined the stylus and cantilever. the stylus is still good but the very soft cantilever has some damage which he can repair. i have suspected this from the time i bought it. i have asked him what is involved in the repair but authorised him to go ahead.

Citroen , when i shipped andy told me to put a declared value under $150 so there would be no tax his end. i will politely request he does likewise. most retailers will "work with" their customers as it doesn't affect their income but increases repeat business. i have had cables from australia that have been around that $400 mark but declared at a lower price. the asians declare ridiculously low prices on their goods as a matter of course. on ebay there a ppl who include in their listings that they will assist the customer if possible while others state it is an offence to make a false declaration. it would affect what can be claimed if the item goes missing though.

I'd be uncomfortable with declaring a sub $400 value, if only for insurance purposes if it got lost/damaged in the post, let alone the implications of making a false declaration.
I understand its required to pay GST on improved value but would like to know the nuts and bolts of making sure that its the improvement only that I'd be paying GST on and not the whole cartridge.

rocl - it would be useful to learn (in due course) in more detail what the problem was with the cartridge. It appears that the stylus-cantilever is fine, but the suspension & damper, onto which it is attached, could do with some repair or refurbishment. What is the cartridge's age, do you know (eg. from the previous owner)?

What is the cartridge's age, do you know (eg. from the previous owner)? here is the 1st reply from andy I have carefully inspected the DV Kaitora, and here is what I recommend. the stylus still has some life left on it. Although I can upgrade the current stylus, I suggest to wait until you hear some sort of distortion . However the bent stylus (suspension) needs to be repaired now . It's got a very delicate suspension for better tracking like XV1-S, but needs to be taken cared of periodically. the other response is posted above. i've had it seven years. i don't recall what was said about the age, just the hours. it would have to be at least 10yrs i would think. i got it from a sth african dealer on audiogon where it had been traded on an XV1-S

Ah good thanks. Did the cantilever ever look mis-aligned to your eye? yes - i was never really happy with the way it looked. i spent a lot of time looking and it always "seemed" to be falling over to the left a little but i could never really assess it properly. that was as much the reason for getting it checked as was stylus wear
