When I was finally able (in my '40s) I went for all locally-made, except for the LP12 that I already had. I was very proud of that system and shared its impressive sounds with many curious people. (Perreaux E1601, ECD1, Image 411 speakers and Slinkylinks.)
Then, after my Uncle passed on, my brother and I inherited the many systems that he and his partner put together in the 1950s and '60s. I would have been about 7 or 8 when I first encountered their listening room. So, music didn't just have to "be on" while other stuff was happening.
A few years later, my bro and I cherry-picked our ideal systems and found new owners for the remainder. (He has QUAD II monoblocks and a 22 Control Unit to go with his 401/3012. That's fed into 3-way Goodmans/Whiteley cabinets with custom xovers.)
I chose a pair of QUAD II clones (built by my uncle's partner) and a 22 which was rebuilt with minimalist, modern innards and a remote control. The monoblocks were rebuilt with RCAs & IECs and new transformers. My much-loved Image speakers were then sold to be replaced with a lovely pair of Spendor BC1s. I also found a nicer plinth for my Linn and built myself some Western Electric/Switchcraft interconnects. I'm still using Supra spkr cable but am keen to re-try some CableTalk 3 I hung onto.
So, along with a Graham Slee MC phono stage, this journey is possibly "parked up" for the near future - until I get around to the Leak Varislope/TL12+/301/3009 set-up I have in storage
