I had always been lead to believe that the lighter the playing weight, the better the performance. However, having moved from MM to MC I find that playing weight for MC carts needs to be set a bit higher than MM. is it that despite the superior (mostly) performance of MC over MM, that the MC is less efficient?
showing my age, in that when I bought my first TT, cart choices were either magnetic or ceramic, and that magnetic said to be better. Thus my first cart was an ADC magnetic, from memory, I think the model was a 550. I don’t think ADC still exist.

Hi sub - others may elaborate here, but I think it is to do with the stiffer suspension of MCs generally (compared with MMs), ie lower Compliance. Requires more VTF in order to get the Stylus Rake Angle (SRA) & Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) sitting correctly when in the groove.

Why do MCs have lower compliance? That's a decent question..... better not digress

Hi MW,
I would refer you to Micheal Gerzons article on record wear in the February 1970 issue of HiFi News and record review which would appear to infer the opposite. Watch out for the maths !
