Guys,
Does shielding of any type need to be grounded to be effective? Or does it still shield if not grounded but do a better job if grounded?
Thoughts please.

Electrostatically yes, grounded to the system ground. Earthing the system at the mains earth at one point only, usually the preamp or amplifier earth terminal, helps. The amp or preamp might already have an earthed power cable though. Magnetic shielding (eg to cut back magnetically induced hum from a transformer) works without connecting it electrically to the system ground. Grounding the system well makes a huge difference to the sound IME. Then there's interconnect shielding where the shield should be connected at one end only, and the 'cold' wire then becomes the negative conductor, the 'hot' wire the signal conductor.
