This is something I've toyed with over the past few years and never really got around to doing much about it, part of what drives this fascination is that once a year I volunteer a system for the local school Disco, so far it's been mainly effects I provide such as lasers, smoke machines, colour heads, Image projection etc (the shed is essentially a Tardis with anything from Jet engines to Tube amps), but after augmenting the local DJ's "plastic" system with a couple of subs I thought a good sounding system would be a good start, and is probably 10X what the new stuff weighs...
The eventual aim is to build a nice sounding PA kit, nothing over the top but using a mix of tube and transistor/mosfet amps with a combination of speakers in a 4 way configuration.
It's still in inception stage and probably a moving target but I thought I'd start with what I have sitting in the shed and possibly end up with something that might actually sound good and hopefully without having to start from scratch again.
I've been keen on horns ever hearing a setup at Beeman's place years ago and have been sporadically collecting bits when the opportunity arises so you'll notice a leaning in that direction : )
Speaker Kit acquired thus far..
JBL 2405 Slot tweeters
Altec 511b Horns with 906b drivers
Altec 421LF 8LH 15" Mid Woofers
Eminence ( I think) 18" Drivers in 200Ltr cabinets, ex Ken Newton
I have various amps ranging from QSC GX7's to small tube amps, DBX compressor, Orban Parametric EQ, 4 way crossovers. graphic EQ's etc.. etc
I would expect that the Sub's change to something with a bit more ability in a horn loaded capacity at some stage, Ken's Subs go very deep and are very clean but not really fit for purpose.
Apart from the Sub amplification I'd really like to keep it purely analog which will mean dropping the compressor and swapping out the 4 way crossover at some stage.
So that's where it sits at present, just a basic parts list and I'd be keen to hear opinions good and bad
Cheers
