I lust for one of these arms on an old Technics DD... but at that price? Ouch.

Lots of choices around for a good arm at that price point. Are they really that good or buoyed by nostalgia.

A different design from todays arms - knife-edge bearing, alloy arm tube, lightweight headshell..... Synergistic match with Denon DL103 they say. Rarity value, I guess, in this NOS condition.

the packaging and presentation of my modern sme has not changed a bit

When I saw that I thought they had either added an extra naught by accident, or had already sold it elsewhere/privately so artificially jacked up the price on TM so no-one would bid!
Used these usually sell for $300 to $500. NOS maybe double that?

Dreaming...
Last one of those I sold off for about $300.00 on TM IIRC. Sonically not great, good match for Shure V15. At that price not far off the price of one of the newer SME arms ?

"Tell im ees dreamin" However he may find an audiophool, you never know on Trade me ! I tried to advise a TM lister they were asking too much for a Plinius 2100i amp (asking $1100), and got a very rude response! Over a month later and several relistings is still unsold.

What was the difference between the 3012 II and the R version? Arm tube - alu cf stainless steel, different counterweight, bearing. Others? The R is compatible with a wider range of carts, and more neutral but less "romantic" sounding.

GD, That would be the 3009 Series II Improved.. title off the box reads Model 3009 series II improved non-detachable shell . The swoppy version is the model 3009/S2 Improved (detachable shell). Had the former, still got the latter.

The R's certainly employed a Stainless steel arm tube, like the original series 1's, and some detail differences at the back end, the most obvious being much finer graduations for adjustment. According to my refs: Series 1 Stainless steel Series 2 Aluminium Alloy Series 2 imp Aluminium Alloy Series 2 R Stainless Steel Series III Titanium Series IV Magnesium Series V Magnesium
