Any suggestions for a Hi-Fi Rack? I want a simple thing with three or four layers. This sort of thing would be just fine: Serious
But $800 seems a bit steep. I would build one myself if I had the space to work.

I'd encourage DIY if you're inclined at all that way.... I made this 'rack' (lower style than you're thinking) a while back - it was just pine plywood, cut into blocks, stacked & glued together. It can be made in modules & stacked 2 or more levels. Finish was 'blonded' wipe-on stain, with satin/matt polyurethane clear coating. But yes, you need a little bit of work-space.

Not fussed on the Melamine veneered MDF tbh, would prefer ply: It's a much more honest material IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've just invested in two (more) turntables and if that wasn't enough I am going to have to splash out on a cartridge, and maybe a Moving Coil phono stage or SUT, and likely a tonearm as well. The budget won't go that far so $$$ for a rack is not an option. I am very much a DIYer in the kiwi tradition, and have a bit of spare Rimu, but space / tools are now a problem. I do like Owen's creation. I wont need space side by side as my project is for a one source system: TT on top, phono stage next shelf, pre-amp and power amp (ATC CA2 & ATC CP1) can sit on top of each other ... or I can keep trolling TradeMe.

+1 for this one. It's what I ended up doing. Got the threaded stainless bolts, nuts and washers from Trademe and had some birch ply already. You could of course use any ply and make it look decent. You don't even need any power tools if you take your ply to a business and get them to cut and drill it for you. I did this once for the price of a dozen beers. I used a sanding sealer and a stain/varnish but once again you can make your own choices.

Actually you might find that your local Mitre 10 or Bunnings might do that for you too if you buy the ply off them. Don't ask them on a Saturday morning though...
Danish oil can give you a really nice finish.

Once upon a time, ITM would cut up panels for you when you bought there - other companies may do this. Cutshop in Akld/Hamilton specialises in CNC cutting to requirements - www.cutshop.comA bit of cost involved, but professionally done, much time saved. Or, buy 600 wide panels & cut yourself the other dimension. A bit wide at 600mm but if doing the TNT style rack, the threaded rod takes up a bit of width ea side.
