You may recall the restoration I did on my nephew's early vintage Planar 3. With the 4.5mm thick felt mat & with the Rega Arm Height Spacer fitted, there was the problem with the RB202 arm counterweight hitting the acrylic lid. So, I made up a couple of black-painted 5mm MDF spacer blocks to lift the rear of the lid a bit when it's down - not too conspicuous...

Now, with a new cartridge, a Sumiko Pearl in the wings to replace the Rega Carbon fitted, the problem is worse, as (i) the Pearl's elliptical stylus needs more precise VTA & (ii) the Pearl is a significantly taller cartridge.... VTA needs to come up a bit (0.7mm washers added to the Rega arm spacer which has only 2mm ht increments). A new, thinner Rega mat is on order. We may have to look at a smaller diam, RB300-style c'weight on the RB202 arm.

The Pearl fitted - the lid is OK when arm is on arm-rest, but needs to be off when arm is down on the record. (The Planar 3's glass platter is 12mm thick.)

Easier to get a custom lid fitted? Otherwise could you modify the rear of the plinth to raise the height of the hinge and then place rubber 'rests' at the front of the table?
If you approach a plastics firm directly - you can get lids done cheap I believe...

The Reverend Johnny H is correct. I get my dust covers custom made by Cambrian Plastics in Henderson. Should cost $100 - $150 depending on size etc. The original el cheapo plastic hinges are bound to break so I would replace them at the same time. Cheers Graham
PS - I can't get 'Fat Bottomed Girls' by Freddy Mercury out of my head !!!!

Further on the lid problem - I saw that a RP3 owner in Oz has simply slotted the screw holes vertically, on the lid hinge blocks & moved them up ~5mm. Fairly easy & tidy.

And as he says they still run fast, and with the white belt even faster.

And as he says they still run fast, and with the white belt even faster. Yes, as someone once explained to me, a thicker drive belt means faster platter speed, because of the slightly increased rotational diameter & thus increased gearing - because this effect is greater on the small diam pulley than on the larger sub-platter wheel...
