www.stereophile.com/content/visit-audiologistI had my ears syringed out once only, when I was a teenager, but have had no major problems in this regard since - my hearing (as opposed to 'listening' ), technically, is now considerably less discerning however.

I had my ears syringed when I couldn't hear anything out of one ear. The blob of wax was quite a sight, but miraculously my hearing was restored I now regularly self syringe my ears, against the recommendation of an ENT relative!

Monsieur Citroen - do you just use a plastic-tipped syringe?

I had my ears syringed when I couldn't hear anything out of one ear. The blob of wax was quite a sight, but miraculously my hearing was restored I now regularly self syringe my ears, against the recommendation of an ENT relative! The medical people apparently do not recommend syringing, instead favour a type of suction device after using drops to loosen the wax up. I have seen DIY suction devices advertised for sale at chemists. When I had a build up of wax I was referred to a clinic at my local hospital, as it appears the proper device is too expensive for the small medical centre I visit to buy. Did have L ear syringed once, not very comfortable experience and took several days for the discomfort to go. Not tried DIY, but will look at that if the wax build up happens again.

Monsieur Citroen - do you just use a plastic-tipped syringe? Yes, use what I have on hand. Lubricate first to loosen any wax. Then syringe warm warm in and use as much suction out to remove wax.

- Lubricate in-ear? Or syringe nozzle? - Suction, I don't recall that happening, but it was a longggg... time ago.

Lubricate ear wax by putting in a few ear drops of your favourite recipe or propriety ear drop.
Massage ear to distribute lubricant around ear canal.
I then squirt warm water in and while the syringe is sealed over ear canal withdraw syringe rapidly to suck out under suction pressure.
But as I mentioned earlier, this is not the recommended method as prescribed by medical professionals.

The syringe suction must give your ear drum a good ultrasonic tug
