My well trained partner spotted this in the Webbs' catalogue:
Garrard 301, 12 inch SME and Denon DI103 mc Thorens TD125 with 12 inch SME EAR E Glow S valve phono amp
EAR 861 valve power amp C-J ET5 triode preamp C-J ET2 line stage C-J Classic 60 valve power amp
Tannoy 15 inch York corner cabinets speakers
All of this is from a deceased estate and bidding is open on-line for the next 3 days. I did wonder if Webbs' is going to be the eventual repository for our collectable gear given that TM is pretty boring at the moment and DL seems to be in decline. Tell me that I am wrong.

Estimate prices seem a tad on the high side, whereas asking prices are more than reasonable.

I see the catalogue is finally up, they have been spruiking this for a couple of weeks now.
If you think those prices are high you should see their car estimates.
Is there a ridiculous 15% buyers premium on these items ?

Post by Citroen on Nov 4, 2023 15:59:26 GMT 12
How far off the car estimates do they usually get?

Worse than their hifi auctions.
Reading thru the T&C
5. After the Sale
5.1. Buyers Premium In addition to the hammer price, the buyer agrees to pay to Webb’s the buyer’s premium. The buyer’s premium is 19.5% of the hammer price plus GST. (Goods and Services Tax) where applicable.

OMG!
No wonder they want such a high price, to cover the additional costs

I got a little flutter when I saw these:
Reminded me of this image from the My Cassette revival thread: But from the dimensions more like VHS tape size? Or maybe just for file cards? When I worked in the Auckland Museum library on a 6 month temp job in the early '80s there were file card cabinets like that.

I hope they're higher spec than those castors!

I had a serious think about these speakers, especially as I will be in Auckland for Wednesday "Pick-up" day but at 1.9m tall they wouldn't fit in the SUV even with all the seats down.

I admired them too as what I thought might be a competent DIY woodwork project, perhaps from a published plan, but my grumpy self thought, could place felt in the picture frame recesses above and below the drivers, and then anyway have chamfered side edges, a bit more aerodynamic... and while the stepped strips making the curve of the horn mouths are cute, why not rout a curve in the side walls of them and insert bendy plywood, damped and stiffened behind, whatever ...
I had no desire or need for them, but they were interesting to look at.
As for fitting in the SUV;- not even diagonally? Or 3D diagonally?
No roof rack I assume.
Cheers! ;=}))

Here is the realised price (plus as MichaelW noted plus 19.5% buyers premium plus 15% GST) for the items listed. Estimated price first then Realised Garrard 301, 12 inch SME and Denon DI103 mc $5-6k $5258 Thorens TD125 with 12 inch SME $2-3k $1314.50 EAR E Glow S valve phono amp $2.5-4k $3107EAR 861 valve power amp $5-8k $8365 C-J ET5 triode preamp $5-8k $7170C-J ET2 line stage $2.5-4k $1314.50C-J Classic 60 valve power amp $3-4k $3585 Tannoy 15 inch York corner cabinets speakers $12-15k $25095
So Webb's estimated prices weren't too far off the mark - unless of course you add in the buyers premium plus GST. Let's try with the respectable Conrad Johnson Classic 60 which sold bang on the estimate at $3585. With the buyers premium the price is $4284.07 and with GST the final price is $4926.68. Not such a bargain then. The buyer of the Tannoy Yorks paid in all $34486.79 which is seriously stupid. Webb's are creaming it!

The estimates at auction are just for the sale price, no premiums etc so the estimates were pretty close.

What wasn't clear to me was whether the +GST referred to the total purchase or was just gst on the buyers premium. i.e. no gst on the second hand goods but gst on the buyer premium "service".

GST applies only to the buyers premium. Basically, you are buying second hand goods so not GST rated but the premium is a service which attracts GST, as you say.

The Tannoy Cheviots caught my eye; going by the look of the tweeters, I wonder if they're 10" drivers?
