It's been 18 months since GEARBOX launched the above Kickstarter campaign (unsuccessful), but GEARBOX developed their GEARBOX Automatic turntable anyway - US$700-750. Michael Fremer reviews it. " The sound produced by this turntable/phono preamp combo is rich and generously warm while also reasonable well-detailed. " Features: • Iconic, striking design inspired by the work of product designer Dieter Rams • Pro-ject ultra low-mass tonearm, optimised for the Ortofon OM cartridge series• Ortofon OM10 moving magnet cartridge • Pre-adjusted tracking force and anti-skate • rack recognition software which allows the user to instantly add whatever is playing to their Spotify playlist of choice • Gearbox Automatic app available on Android and iOS • Bluetooth for wireless headphone or speaker connectivity • Built in 12AX7 valve phono stage • Gold-plated cartridge pins and RCA plugs for wired output • Isolated ‘power-on’ control • Solid glass platter and felt slip mat • Precision belt drive with aluminium pulley • 33rpm and 45rpm electronic speed control • Universal DC power adapter for use anywhere in the world • Silicon isolation feet • Phono stage for high-output cartridges • RIAA equalisation • Unweighted total harmonic distortion of <1%. (0.2V on 12AX7 valve) • DC reference for the heater is 0V off the rectified HT output.

GEARBOX: “ The app sends you a notification on your phone telling you which track is playing, with track artwork and the option to add the track to your Spotify playlist, allowing you to listen later in the world of streaming. We hope to have Apple Music playlists added soon... Many of our users are enjoying this facility, especially those who do a lot of digital listening and like sharing their vinyl purchases with friends.…. albeit in the cloud now! "

a different world Owen. I really cant see the point of adding to your Spotify playlist. Be different if it was capturing your vinyl, not adding a digital track.

Yes, a different world... Millennials, Gen Z... Rather than Digital being an adjunct to Vinyl, the way that the we might view this, it may be more the other way around.

I can see vinyl newbies using that app, but not for me.
Besides, those blinking lights would do my head in!
