Quite a good essay article on keeping and moving (or leaving behind) record collections. Great comments so far too. www.stereophile.com/content/starting-overI'm faced with a move myself in 2 months or so... terrifying!!! ;=})) ( It really is! ;- ) { but I will be taking everything if I can}
Reminds me of these cartoons, and what plans do we have ... also thoughts of potential preferred funeral musics ! ;=}) Another subject or thread or two maybe there or in past ones.. ~ RdM

I can't see my family fighting over my music or book collection. Been down the selling off road in the 80s and doing it all over again now with minimal regrets. So many unplayed lps in the collection it makes questions of why spring up constantly. Too many impulse purchases to be stored away for some unrealised time in the future where i'll kick back with dram in hand and immerse myself in the music.
Collection has gone from a high two years ago of 3300 to current 1810 vinyl and digital. The only rule I've followed is if it's a favourite lp out the door make sure I have a quality digital replacement that I can live with. So while the vinyl has shrunk some parts of the digital has grown. I enjoy the sound of good quality vinyl and get a lot of pleasure just from viewing a collection but the question of space becomes more pressing as time ticks on and changes in life occur.
Better to do a cull while I have the ability and time than end up having to take a peanuts offer from a record shop. While I never purchased anything with future collectability in mind There can be some reasonable returns on the right items but it does take knowledge and time to get the best.

A little bit more here but I wish I could get mine to cooksferry 's current level. I need to learn to let go but I'm a self confessed hoarder. Have truly run out of room and debating my options. 1. Sell vinyl and break my heart 2. Buy a larger home 4. Rent a storage locker 5. Plonk them on the floor and hope I don't trip over them! Currently, doing 5!

What's in front of us re: our audio systems/vinyl/digital collections?
Maybe...
1. Marie Kondo: part with anything that doesn’t spark joy when we touch it.
2. The Swedish Death Clean: pare down, so you can better focus on the really important things in life. And, before you die to lessen the burden for your loved ones after you've passed.
Easy to contemplate, harder to achieve - c'est la vie
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]

Working on option 2. Cleaned out my parents house and it was frustrating and heartbreaking in equal measure.

Trust me, the pain of parting doesn't linger. I'd count out a locker. Not much point having the record if it's not at hand to enjoy. Truely a hoarders option. Balancing expectations with reality once you start selling can be a learning curve. It's nice to get a message from a buyer who's excited about the purchase and hopefully gone to a place where the record will be played and not another dust trap on a shelf.

I have a great many things that spark joy when I touch them, unfortunately!

My own proclivity is more in the components area. A rough inventory is 3 turntables, 2 universal players and a cd player, a tape deck, 2 vcrs, an amp/receiver, numerous speakers etc. A fair bit to store.
Surplus to current requirements but mostly beautifully made and I hate to part with them. Not that you’d get much for them anyway.

Dunno, stopped counting years ago.
Been semi-religiously logging stuff on Discogs, 2000+ entries, about half way ?
Slowly selling doubles, triples, out of favour artists etc.
No regrets.
Filled one corner with "plonk them on the floor" - still have spare floor space
No succession policy here.

Two marks against streaming for me. A I like the physical product B you're at the mercy of the provider in too many ways.

I have Tidal. Sounds very good and of the streamers I think they pay one of the most but still peanuts to the artist.

More CD/DVD players, recorders, one almost universal. Two Sony ES cassette decks. Multiple amplifiers, most need repair. Turntables. 3 functional, two in use. Others. HiFi VHS recorders. Plus loads of valve amp parts, heavy transformers. Main speakers need new surrounds, a few other bookshelf ones.
Not like this guy though! ;=}) Cheers ~
