The major news is a new Ortofon SPU Meister Silver. What a delicious thing.
I had considered borrowing the barely-used Hana ML from my LP12 that's in storage but am a sucker for the way an SPU looks.
I'd worn out my SPU #1e so while the new Meister was being wound to order in Denmark, I was 'slumming it' with a V15/iii that wears a HE stylus.
I just bunged it on my back arm that usually wears a 2M Mono. Nothing wrong with the Shure at all although I had to clean the stylus far more frequently - the HE profile seemed to be digging out a lot more fluff than my usual ellipticals, even with a wet-cleaned, vacuum-dried collection!
Last month, my valve pre recently "failed to proceed". It's a simple design Phil Brass built into a QUAD 22 case. Luckily I was able to I swap in my Perreaux E160i as a preamp, feeding that into my twin QUAD II clones. (I do plan to also try the E160i as an integrated to see how that sounds in the scheme of things.)
Wow, but using it purely as a preamp, it's such a huge upgrade I'm going to have to think about what to do now. If I'm honest, the poorly preamp probably lasted so long mainly on aesthetic grounds, anyway.
To be continued ...

I grew up listening to a V15 iii mounted in an sme ii on a thorens turntable. I didn't know any better then but it sounded great.I know nostalgia isn't what it used to be but I'd be interested to try one in my current set up just to see.

I've got a Jico SAS stylus in my V15/3 and it sounds better than the original. Still not as musical sounding- to me- as my Garrott P77 SAS. Bit more leaner-CD- sounding! Very clean but still nice.

I've got a Jico SAS stylus in my V15/3 and it sounds better than the original. I know Jicos are top of the game here but I'm always mindful that we often compare the sound of an outgoing stylus with that of an incoming.
A head-to-head with them both brand new would really interest me!

I would imagine that for 80% of people, that set-up would wildly exceed their expectations of vinyl and be the crown of an endgame system. What a beautiful sound they must have made.
Then there's we 20% who are susceptible to upgradeitis!

Absolutely. And so quiet. I actually went to check the amp was on after lowering the arm a coupla times!
Tracking at 4g takes a little mental and physical adjustment, though.
