Last year I managed to pick up a pair of JBL L-300 Summit loud speakers. My WAD KLS3 MK3 loudspeakers, that I have had for a very long time have finally been surpassed. I was delighted, however a couple of months ago I started to notice a bit of an issue...
and
The right-hand speaker had a problem, the sound was fading in and out and I was hearing a lot of wind and whispering coming from the speaker. So troubleshooting started.
After a lot of mucking about with cable swapping and so on, I confirmed that the right-hand speaker had the problem. It was almost certainly a crossover issue. It was at that time that I was reminded of the Nelson Pass article on his journey with the JBL's and his upgraded crossover. The article I found was a PDF, and it is on his Firstwatt site.
Ok, so let's do this... my eyesight has largely gone for fine detail soldering etc, so I commissioned Phil Brass to build them for me. NZ$1500 they were fitted. Clarity Caps and Mills resistors are not cheap.
I had always intended to try his upgrade, so this was the moment...
The day arrived! He extracted the JBL crossovers.
Very smart boxes
Full of components that were munted
As you can see.
The Nelson Pass crossover was very smart...
A thing of beauty... I had three options, I chose the cheapest as I will go Active in the next couple of years.
