Explore any field long enough and you know there is nothing new under the sun.

Oh, how woefully cynical and sad a statement that is! 😜

Not me! I am constantly exploring new things and new pieces.
One of them is the stuff people post here... I go not heard that and I'll go listen, streamed in the first instance, then Vinyl if I like it.
And there is the ever present challenge of my children, saying
"Dad, have you heard this band/group/orchestra?"
Of course I most often say no, then come up with something along the same lines that I have heard.
Keep on growing, never stop moving forward!

Saturday Night Fever and disco stopped my musical development in its tracks and rap music confirmed that all was lost.

Guilty as charged. Still trying to catch up with all the great music from the '60s, no time for anything else . A lot of my trouble is when I find a new artist I like I tend to do a deep drive and then find I have around 100 Steven Wilson related items or the complete Vic Chesnutt and Jason Molina output. I went through an intense Americana phase and found a lot of new music but over time that focus has shifted to just a handful of related artists as the chaff gets weeded. There is a lot of music I have tested and abandoned as it doesn't hold my attention . Familiar music is like comfort food or rereading a favourite book, the feelgood factor. So, excuse me while I cue up Country Joe and the Fish and plug in my time machine.

Not so here - always on the lookout for new music. A variety of online sources, friends and blogs usually have me checking out a few new (to me) artists per week. Does not at all detract from the music I grew up with. As a young 'un I had a distain for disco, but once I freed my mind my ass did follow. When I became aware of hip hop - I thought what the! Now it is a bit of a guilty pleasure.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I'm always seeking new music/new artists to stimulate my brain and my guts.
Nothing wrong with the old ones for some comfort and familiarity but often I just need something new to challenge and excite me.

We stop because some peeps make suggestion like listening to Ba-jork and when we get to where it is to listen it's SO bad that we end up having to take days and sometimes weeks off work to recover..!! Just best to stick to Kenny and Dolly..thats where the safe money is!

Just best to stick to Kenny and Dolly..thats where the safe money is! I love Bjork. I can even tolerate a bit of Dolly! But all good to you for sticking to Kenny Dorham. 😁

I'm partial to 'wandering' to hear new music. About monthly, I dedicate a few hours and get into Bandcamp, Spotify and Soundcloud for that purpose alone. It can be frustrating tho' as there are so many Cul de Sac's to be navigated to hit paydirt. As noted by colleagues, streaming is the modus operandi to determine value & outlay. I also have an effective filter: I'll listen to selections in Spotify a few weeks after the initial listen, for move to my 'buy' list or rejection. p.s. Hip/Hop, House, Disco, Rap free zone here
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]

Up until a few years I have only really explored odd corners like the 1960s or 50s, or Latin American crooners or Ry Cooder or whatever - timeless stuff. However, in the past two or so years I have bought and loved things like Forenzics, Dry Cleaning, Wet Leg, Sierra Ferrell, She and Him. So I'm reversing my trends a little. That said, until I was about 30, 80% of what I heard was cutting-edge and very new.

I love finding some new music.
The trouble for me is that such a large portion of the stuff coming out these days is plain rubbish (I'm starting to sound like my parents)
Take hiphop. 80s great, 90s great, 00s great, 10's eh less so, 20s rubbish.
I went through a phase last decade of going backwards in time. 1930's 40's etc. One thing that struck me is how much better the singing was 'back in the day' compared to what I hear these days. There are of course still great vocalists, but on average; they all sound exactly the same. No character to the voice, just a generic sound I call 'soft voice'.
Take for example the current crop of male RnB singers eg: Chris brown, Jason derulo etc. The voice is interchangeable, I could not for the life of me tell the difference in voice from one to the other. Compare that to say a Nat King Cole or a Ray Charles and the old boys actually sung in their own voice. The youngin's all sing in somebody elses voice.
The lack of backup singers etc is such a shame to. The do woop girls in the background of music form say the 50s or 60s just makes such a pleasant sound.
Or the close harmonies of the Andrews Sisters. It's hard to find anything modern that has even half the character.
Probably the most intersting thing I have found recently is Muse's lattest album 'The Will of the People'. They have paid homage to a huge array of artists. Some of the influences are obvious: The first song 'The Will of the People' is an obvious homage to Marilyn Manson's 'The Beautiful People'. Some of the others songs are equally obvious who the hommage is to. Others are much more subtle and I haven't yet put my finger on who. I know its there but I can't figure it out.
I think its the 3rd song has a big Queen feel to the piano and the harmonies. One song pays clear homage to System of a Down and some other 'death metal' type bands.

I've often explored new music, I might say I always have, but it comes in bursts. Sometimes for the moment what you have live or as a selection is entirely sufficient! But then you sometimes get new surprises, radio, the internet, forums like this.
With increasing discernment too of course, as one gets older ;=})
Just this afternoon I heard new music via the Concert Programme, about a German acoustic brass band techno group that will be playing at Womad, March 17-19. Unfortunately you have to listen to it online. A great interview with Sebastian Borkowski from Trevor Reekie.
