Always thought it was quite a good idea really but never sort of took off did it. Remember being very impressed with the Meridian M2 or M3 systems back in the day. Well outside what I could afford at the time, wonder what I'd think of them now ?

I think active speakers are a brilliant idea. One of the essential issues in putting together a system is matching your speakers and amp. Not only is there proper integration but there must be space and financial savings. The downside is flexibility. If you want to change your speakers that means your amplification as well. ATC seems a really good option. Both their amplifiers and speakers are great. They are a pro company and I like their no-nonsense approach.

Heresy eh? Longterm I intend to pick up a pair of active monitors for a second system/mini studio set up. If this'll ever come to pass, I dunno, but it had never occurred to me that such an idea could be heretical. Makes perfect sense to me as an idea and my thoughts align with those of @sl1210 above... Audiophiles can be an oddly contradictory bunch...

I was mightily impressed with an active Focal speaker system (SM6's?) even though the source was digital Ultimately, not for me. Too clinical sounding but that may have just been down to the source.

There's also increased general awareness & demand now from millennials - who love bluetooth speakers with amps on board.
