Met John whilst I was attending Sussex University - he drank like a fish, smoked like no tomorrow (dope), and produced this most amazing sound (we only booked him solo). From the many conversations I had with him I became a fan. I kind of liked the first part of that article, I disliked the technical analysis, John would have laughed and said "I want people to dance, to cry, to laugh and to have fun!"
John remains a figure of inspiration for many people, me among them.

Thanks for the link Ian. Lot of reading. For a artist with a fairly small niche following bit surprising to find he's had at least 3 biographies.
Only digital I have left is an early Island remaster and the deluxe double which is my go to. Dithered over the big box set and fortunately missed out. I see Danny Thompson mentioned several times. There's a man who would have some interesting tales to tell.

Good read although I also started to wander a bit as the technical depths were plumbed. If I had to choose think I'd go with One World as my top choice for a JM record but he had a pretty decent run up to and including Grace and Danger.

Good read although I also started to wander a bit as the technical depths were plumbed. If I had to choose think I'd go with One World as my top choice for a JM record but he had a pretty decent run up to and including Grace and Danger. Somehow I missed this conversation earlier in the year. My own favourite JM recording may be slightly controversial but I stand by "The Church with one Bell" as top of the heap. Purists will sneer about the fact it is all cover versions, but I believe his version of "Small Town Talk" to be the best out there (and I've chased down a lot of them). During lockdown I read a book about his life which said that the sessions for the Church recordings were a happy affair with mates of his and I think it shows in the songs. Better still it appeared for the first time on vinyl as part of the 2021 RSD crop. Both the CD and LP have lovely bottom ends. For many years the CD was one of my test discs when auditioning hifi gear. Solid Air, One World and Grace and Danger are very good but don't overlook Church in the John Martyn oeuvre.

I bought this when it came out in 2014, thinking it was a remaster of his classic Solid Air but instead got a mishmash of 90's reworked hits. John Martyn – Solid Air (Classics Revisited)

An album that has escaped me ! What's members' picks for CD and LP ? Yes, The Church with one Bell was always thin on the ground. Originally released on the Independiente label both the CD and LP were hard to find. Even after the the RSD re-release of the LP the original 1998 LP sells for north of $NZ600 on Discogs. Prior to the RSD appearance it very rarely appeared for sale and when it did you'd have needed to shell out around NZ$800. I cant remember where I picked up the CD, probably in the UK, but despite always keeping an eye out for it I never saw another for sale.
