Hi - these are listed on Trademe for $2900, so I figure I can list them here less the Trademe commission of $230 = $2670
I bought these as a demonstration pair 2 years ago off Paul of PQ Imports. Here are the improvements I have made to them:
(the following is copied and pasted from the Trademe listing)
-the input fuse and connectors have been bypassed in the interests of better connectivity and, therefore sound. As the photos show, the input panels are included and can be reconnected in 30 minutes, but I would recommend to leave them off. Yes there is an element of risk in bypassing the fuse, but I have been running these for 2 years without the fuse and without problems. And they do sound better bypassed.
-They have been 'razored' - see www.audioasylum.com/forums/MUG/messages/15/155318.html This upgrade is a very labour intensive procedure which involves stripping the speakers and applying noise-damping self-adhesive strips to the panels in between the foils which produce the sound, in order to dampen the panels and prevent unwanted resonances, thus refining the sound. The same sound-deadening material was applied to the surrounding frame (see photos)
-The third major upgrade consists of the rigid, sand-filled frames which have been custom-built to provide a resonance-free, sound-enhancing upgrade to the flimsy standard feet the speakers come with. The base includes 3 screw-adjustable points to ensure good floor contact and the ability to level the speakers - another feature lacking in the original speaker.
The combined result of these upgrades is to take an already ground-breaking speaker (google reviews) to an even higher level. Listening sessions are welcome, just leave your contact details below.
I am selling because I am a superannuitant and I need to reduce my financial investment in hifi gear. I have moved to a much cheaper tube amp, and DIY open-baffle speakers which are very easy to drive. The Magnepans are not an easy to drive speaker, so the purchaser will want to have a reasonably grunty amplifier if you want high volume levels. Having said that, demos will be using my 45 watt tube amp ;-)
