A good friend of mine is a hobbyist speaker builder (and a solid good guy). He's kicked Danny off his FB speaker group for spewing nonsense. Danny's YT videos seem to make a lot of sense, and I can't separate fact from fiction in the world of OB speakers, but I trust my buddy's opinion and so my advice to you is to be skeptical.

Really? I'm interested to know more of what your mate said. I have seen a number of reviews on YT of these speakers and they are all glowing. Although when I look at these speakers I see that OB speakers need to be a long way from the wall. Probably more than what I canndo naturally.

My experience is some contributers in the DIY community can be quite prickly when challenged on their design philosophy and would rather not bother arguing the point. John Krutke (Zaph Audio) did some well regarded driver evaluations and speaker designs but got sick of being trolled when people didn't agree with his results so eventually gave up which was a shame. Maybe put Danny in the same class, he certainly seems to have a strong following.

I would normally disregard Javad's comments as a personality conflict, but it's hard for me to even imagine Javad as prickly. I asked for more details and it ultimately came down to Danny's dogma not being scientific or even reasonably defensible. Danny tried to present opinion as fact, and that didn't fly in the group. Absolutely agree about Danny's reputation on Audio Circle and other places, so I was pretty surprised at Javad's comments. I can't say one way or the other, which is why I'd just advise a healthy dose of skepticism.

Nice reasoned reply from you all. I randomly came across him and have been interested by the fact that I could potentially upgrade my speakers for a lot less.
Who would you guys rate as good kit providers (I am not going down the complete DIY route)?

I don’t build speakers, but Javad uses Parts Express for a lot of stuff.

Who would you guys rate as good kit providers (I am not going down the complete DIY route)? Tell us about your current speakers and system, room size, listening preferences and a budget we can spend on your new ones would help. DIY will always be a leap of faith as of course you can't demo but you need to do a lot of research to try and work out the style of speaker best suited. There is usually enough information about most of the kit speakers out there to narrow the odds end up with someting you like. Cost benefits and the pleasure of listening to something you've created give a lot of satisfaction.

I have a Sachem system basically. Twin Sachem mono blocks and Sachem Pure pre amp. I'm sticking with digital at the moment for sources and the speakers are Audio Pro Black Vector V3 along with Audio Pro SW450 sub. It does go very well. Good imaging, good resolution. Plays everything well. Equally as good as my mates $50,000 system in those regards. But it's just not as exciting to listen to as his. I mainly listen to rock and blues I guess but also dabble in jazz, country, heavy metal and techno. Budget...... maybe $5,000 could be more but could be less. Any advise is greatly appreciated

Oh, you're talking about Javad Shadzi? I'd already headed over to Meniscus Audio to recommend their kits to jeb950 and saw they have a couple of his designs on offer. Then I headed to FB to see what the fuss was about but gave up pretty quickly, life is to short...

Any advise is greatly appreciated If you are talking about getting Danny Richie to design upgrade crossovers for your Audio Pros then my advice would be not to bother, your money is better spent invested in new speakers, IMO of course. I'd also caution against spending too much money on a first build, DIY is not for everyone. Best dip your toes in the water, you can get some spectacular results for not a lot of money. Meniscus Audio - have some great kits on offer meniscusaudio.com/product-category/speaker-kits/?orderby=menu_orderSeveral of the designers and a lot of builders hang out at HT Guide forum, some great information there. www.htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?6-Mission-Possible-DIYI've always been intrigued by the Statement speakers, full range with a ribbon tweeter and open back mids. There's a lot of information and build threads on these in the forum above.
Troels Gravesen is very well regarded in the DIY community and has built and designed a lot of speakers. www.troelsgravesen.dk/Diy_Loudspeaker_Projects.htm#PAGE_INDEXSome of his designs can be bought in kitset form from Jansen Audio. www.jantzen-audio.com/diykits/And in the best of internet forum traditions, I'm going to recommend what I own/built. 🙂 Always liked the Scanspeak drivers so ended up building the ZRT 2.5 way design by the above mentioned Zaph Audio. www.zaphaudio.com/They can be bought in kitset form at Madisound (note they also have several other kitsets on offer). www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2.5-way-speaker-kits/zaph|audio-zrt-2.5-way-revelator-tower-parts-only-pair/

Javad, however, is a first rate guy. (Of course I’ve read the same thing about Danny. Shutting up)

I watched 5 of his videos. A lot of padding and not much useful information. There is also nothing on the website to indicate any professional qualifications so I guess he is just like us. That is an enthusiast with an opinion that he likes sharing. I'll send my bank details to you all shortly.

Excellent idea. I can't think of any downside since there is nothing in it having put a deposit on a K3 turntable.
