ii sold my prototype PureAudio Vinyl phono pre, and purchased a Perreaux VP3 dual phono pre last May. The VP3 is a dual phono stage, having separate Mm and MCstages, ideal for using my two turntables. One a Yamaha YP-D9 - a fully manual audiophile rig with an Ortofon 2M Black, which sounded superb through the PA Vinyl, and a Linn LP12, Valhalla power supply and Ittok LV11 tone arm, circa 1984, fitted with Denon DL103R cart. Which sounded ok through the MC phono Input on my Plinius 8150 integrated amp, but was totally outclassed by the Yamaha and 2M Black.
as discussed elsewhere in my post about hearing aids and Hifi, as a result of surgery and radiation treatment on head and neck, my hearing suffered from about June last year. Still waiting for ACC to make a decision about funding hearing aids, so haven’t listened to music at all since November last year.
But this past week my daughter and partner stayed several days, and insisted on hearing some of my LPs. Started with the Yamaha 2M Black combo, my memory telling me that should give the best sound (a $1200 cart vs $500 for the Denon so should be better, right?). After a while, taking advantage of their young and blemish free hearing asked for their opinion on sound via the Linn/Denon combo.
Well, even to my ears the Linn/Denon sounded vastly superior, especially on well recorded discs (eg, John Lee Hooker, The Healer, and Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat). Clarity, separation of voices and instruments, sound staging, inner detail, all rendered perfectly, while the 2M Black sounded murky and one dimensional. Even my non Hifi housemate remarked “the Yamaha sounds like rubbish compared to the Linn”.
i believe the difference is in te phono stages. Clearly the PA Vinyl is vastly superior on its MM setting compared to the VP3. Somewhat sad now that I sold it!
There was another revelation in store. Owing to my ear issues, I had removed my refurbished KEF Reference 104/2s and replaced them with my old Mission 753s. The KEFs had sounded too bass heavy to my damaged ears, while the 753s helped me hear tv and DVD soundtracks with reasonable clarity. I put the KEFs back and asked my visitors opinion as to whether they were too unbalance for my room. But there was again an universal opinion that the KEFs were superior, even my housemate concurring!
Hope ACC come through soon, I want to be able to listen for myself! My daughter has gone home now, do miss her company, but at 56 she has her on life to live. I’ve left her my LP collection in my will!
