recent mention of Quicksilver Messenger Service has me listening to west coast bands/artists incl. Jorma, a long-standing fav of mine. with Jefferson Airplane: that classic lead outro... with Hot Tuna (incl. great bassist Jack Cassidy from Airplane) still playing together: legends and from 2002: 'Happy Trails' indeed

As a Mono evangelist the MFSL of Surrealistic Pillow is very very very impressive.
Did I add too many verys? .. no.
And Quah is criminaly under-appreciated.

I have four copies of SP and 3 of those are mono which is the way I listened to it originally on my little suitcase player. The Sundazed mono is pretty good and a lazy man's default not having to get up every few minutes to change sides per the Mofi. I got to the stage with many of the double 45 Mofi I was getting the sacd as well just to avoid the constant changing of sides unless I was doing a deep dive listen.

Heh! The only solo Jorma Kaukonen album I have is his 3rd, 2015, Ain't in No Hurry. (original 1400x1400pix) First track is "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" Here are Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady playing it 2017 live in studio for Relix.
I have to say he's not my favourite singer, or even later style, but have utter respect for lineage and musicianship!
_
As for Jefferson Airplane ;-)
I really prefer earlier JA albums I think, I turned off somewhat from the later 'commercial'? ones. One of my favourites from the time, thrashed the vinyl in a hostel in the early 70's on some sort of portable or suitcase player I can't recall, and both lost somehow in myriads of moves since then, was Bless Its Pointed Little Head. Seemed hard to find a replacement last time I looked (years ago) even in CD; there was a re-issue with bonus tracks but I'd love the original again! For instance: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jefferson+airplane+bless+its+pointed+little+head+vinylFat Angel, perhaps ? _ As for SP, although having heard it at friends places in those days, I've never owned a copy. Thanks for the reminder. I see I can catch up here. Surrealistic Pillow (24K Gold Collector's Edition) Full HQ _ Thanks for the memories! ;=})

I've held onto a UK mono copy of Bless It's Pointed Little Head. Can't remember where I got it but it's been there for decades.still in good nick. I do prefer the early JA records. Got into them via the debut, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off but Volunteers was definitely my bail out point so we won't mention Starship. I have three Kaukonen cds but haven't played them in years. Might be time to drag them out.

Yes lp. 1969 UK mono. I possibly picked it up while living in London mid 70s.

Wow, fantastic! Would be nice if you could somehow make a transcription of it, art for art's sake! Cheers!
Not that I would would want to suggest anything improper!
Really, I'm just glad to hear that that exists! I had thought that whatever LP version I had had at that time was a stereo US version.
Thanks for the replies!

Sorry, don't have the gear or knowledge to do a transcription. Bit of a luddite. Re the Kaukonen I have on cd Quah Blue Country Heart Too Many Years Plus on lp by Hot Tuna First Pull Up, Then Pull Down America's Choice. Interesting how many of the SF artists from that mid to late 60s period came from a folk background and it really shows through on many of the releases. Just a side mention to Fairport Convention who at that time were often called the Brit Jefferson Airplane. Both bands had six members and both replaced their original female lead vocalist with a much more forceful, dominant figure. FC even had a dual lead male/female vocalists for a while although the Dyble/Mathews pairing didn't match Slick/Balin. Marty Balin has always been the voice of the Airplane for me. Ps, sorry for wandering away from the original post Foveaux 😏😁

"Re the Kaukonen.. Too Many Years..." Interesting how many of the SF artists from that mid to late 60s period came from a folk background and it really shows through on many of the releases. Yep, the folk link is indelible... Nice montage in the video, from thru' his years too Always enjoyed this song composed by Jorma 1985! ...deeply reflective, it's an idyllic reminder that time is so precious...

Did a quick check to see where he appeared in my collection ... hadn't realized he was on Crosby's "If only I could remember my name" & Zevon's "Tranverse City"
Also found a as new copy of Yellow Fever in addition to a couple (Why?) copies of pull up/down and all the JA stuff.
Time for a re-listen

RdM, AFAIK, Jorma didn't play with QMS. QMS was mentioned in the discussion on 'The Third Mind' release, so triggering met to listen to 'Happy Trails' which lead me to Hot Tuna/Jorma etc. Ref. to 'Happy Trails' was just my [simile] oblique pondering on Jorma's wonderful musical journey... Great to learn that many DL mateys have JA/HT/Jorma deepening their collections too...
