I suggest 2 selections: 1. an Album released in 2020 2. an Album from any year that you discovered, surprised/delighted you, was re-released, an old fav. rediscovered, etc. 1. Am I regressing? happy nostalgia? well it is released by ECM, so that speaks plenty to me. I'll settle for this satisfying jazz/rock release as my best for 2020 (and tellingly, has a weather report vibe). 2. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - thanks to LinnBoy (the dedicated JI fanboy )
"I see music as a lifetime affair." [Rory Gallagher]
"Free - I miss that band, but when I look back, we were very young" [Paul Rodgers]

Not an album as such - more of an ep I guess, but this would be my most played work of last year. On cassette! PGX - Naiverecorded in Chch by Brian Feary - I try and get most of the stuff he is associated with via Bandcamp. At $10 a cassette its a steal.

Got the second to last copy, arrived with a bonus I also got a bonus with my last Melted Ice Cream purchase - Joe Sampson included his Field Recordings with When Did Things Become So-So? Good thing too. I hope you enjoy the PGX - A lot of love for MIC here.

Hard call but I will punt for "Ghosts of West Virginia" by Steve Earle & the Dukes.
Not being a particularly avid Steve Earle fan I bought this LP solely because it is a rare example of a modern recording laid down in glorious MONO.
Apparently Steve's hearing is destroyed to the point where he can't mix in Stereo anymore.
This record is about a mining disaster in West Virginia in 2010. 29 Coal Miners died.
In the olden days it might have been called a concept album. Every song is a direct (often angry) statement about the families of the miners, the industry and/or the conditions in the mine.
The sonics are wonderful.
The songs are powerful and very poignant, particularly when listened to with a Kiwi ear aware of the awful parallels at Pike River.
Masterpiece.
