Spoilt for choice for Asian food in Auckland these days. Malaysians have been in NZ since the 70s (or before) but recently, inexpensive & more authentic bona fide Malaysian can be easily had here, eg.... Mama Rich Cafe in Greenlane: The classic Laksa noodle soup, seafood in this case.... Beef Rendang & Curry Chicken with Roti Canai (Malaysian is interesting, combining Indian, Chinese, Thai. Malay, Indonesian....) Another classic bench-mark, Char Kueh Tiew (stir fried rice noodles)... Mama Rich's Fried Tofu, side dish (with sweet chilli sauce, cucumber, peanuts).... Pandan Chicken (chicken wings tied with Pandan leaves).... Getting hungry

Everything there looks delicious, Owen. Seems similar to Mamak (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mamak-Malaysian-Cuisine/202369436458339), which I first enjoyed in the CBD (Chancery) and which my family are now quite besotted with in Takapuna. Their Laksa, Rendang and Char Kuay Teow look very close to your photos, and I am a big fan of their Nasi Goreng, and their lovely light roti. They also do small plates (soft shell crab, squid, etc) which my boys cannot get enough of - particularly the broccoli (!)
For reasonably priced Japanese, Musashi (in Milford and elsewhere in Auckland) is very good, too.

Greetings 40hz - Mamak Takapuna is close to me & I've heard good things about their Hainanese Chicken. I may be over that way tonight after movies - many thks. And michaelw - KK has been the go-to for Malaysian up here for many yrs, in various locations, but I haven't tried them for many yrs. (Oops, that should be peanuts of course, above on the Fried Tofu )

Continuing our quest to try numerous Malaysian cafes that are appearing here locally, here's a real nice one we've tried a couple of times, in an unusual setting.... Kampung Style inside the historic Glen Eden Railway Station building in W Auckland: The restaurant occupies the LH side of the station building, the train platform is on the RH side. Outdoor 'platform' space available for dining (the train platform is on the opp. side of building). Fried tofu salad (w sweet chilli sauce, peanuts, cucumber) + Banana Prawns on crispy noodles (w egg sauce, fish cake, bok choy). Fish (Head) Noodle Soup (fish pieces, tempura deep fried, glass noodles, pickled greens - classic, excellent.) Hainanese Chicken Rice (poached chicken, another classic dish - I did not personally try this one but it looked good.) Roti Canai (appetiser, excellent curry sauce). Do I need to mention that the portions are large? Pricing is good, $12.50 - $16 mains, $6-10 appetisers. 'Kampung style' I think translates to 'village style' & that describes the popular dishes available here. Malaysian is interesting as it combines Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai....
