I'm just curious about your listening habits. To make things simpler let's focus on your main hifi system and not car/on the way etc, more specifically I'm interested in the following (see my answers as well): - How often do you listen to music and for how long? I'm listening every 2nd day usually (on weekends daily) and each session will be between 60'-180'- Alone or with company? Usually alone however when I have a music-loving friend visiting we would listen together.- What time of day? From 4:00pm and on. I love late-night listening but I get carried away.
- Lights/Doors: I leave the doors partly open and I close the lights if it's late- Speakers or headphones? Speakers- How loud do you play? 70-80db, I find less I don't get enough detail more it becomes tiring. - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? I do that exclusively, I simply cannot appreciate music doing other things in parallel. - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: 50/50 split between Vinyl and playing my CDs (iTunes) or streaming. - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): I listen to something specific even in-terms of sub-genre (eg. 20th century composers). - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track? I nearly exclusively listen to albums.

I was using a dB sound app and seemed to be listening at about 38db average I think. I used to find reading helpful for listening as I'm not concentrating as much. Lately I sit and vege and since I'm more familiar with it can tell if a change has been made. I still tend to listen to and go back to different genres. Classical Jazz or others. On loudness / duration - lately more of my listening has been streaming (Spotify through JPLAY) thru' laptop / USB - and listening up to 90 - 120 minutes. Recently my computer has gone on the blink - leaving me with no sounds - but I hope to get back to it soon.

- How often do you listen to music and for how long? Every day, weekdays from 5 pm through to after dinner, then a late evening album before beddy-byes. In the weekend much the same but I start earlier. - Alone or with company? My mate and daughter join in too, they will even put on an album or two. - What time of day? as above - Lights/Doors: Yes - Speakers or headphones? speakers - How loud do you play? 80+ db, more if we are rock'n'rolling - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? other things - cook, eat, read, boogie and mindless computer games. - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: mostly vinyl, but also cd & tapes - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): listen to what we want, mostly rock, punk, reggae, funk, folk, country - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track? Albums
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

-How often? Randomly, sometimes for days on end, other weeks hardly at all. The main stereo hasn’t been switched on for a week now as I use the headphone system mostly. -Alone or with company? Alone during the day, family in the evening. -Time of day? Usually afternoons, but mornings too if I’m excited about something. Evenings are family and TV time, when we watch telly or listen to a CD on the TV system. (A Denon M-41 and Focal speakers). -Lights-not if I can help it, during the day that’s not possible, never in the evening. Doors ajar. -Headphones during the day at the workbench, sometimes speakers. For the main system it’s speakers. -How loud? Not measured it, comfortable, not very loud but not soft. I have sensitive hearing and high volume annoys me. -Exclusively or other things in parallel? On headphones mostly I’m working, other times enjoying. On main system, exclusively. -Vinyl-CD-files-streaming? Everything except files, even internet radio. -Genre? Mostly classical, sometimes rock/pop and modern jazz. Hard to classify really, each music has its own unique genre! -Whole album or skip tracks? On Tidal I skip tracks notoriously, but sometimes I sit and listen to the artist and play them all. On vinyl I listen to memorable tracks, usually the whole record if it’s classical.

- How often do you listen to music and for how long? - daily, but occasionally go for days or weeks without listening (lack of time). - Alone or with company? - alone usually. - What time of day? -evenings typically 8:30 - 11:00ish. - Lights/Doors: - dim lights, door ajar because my wife likes to hear the music from the other end of the house! - Speakers or headphones? - speakers (but am listening to headphones a little now). - How loud do you play? - fairly loud, simulating near 'live' SPLs (not LOUD concert SPLs though). - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? - I like to listen exclusively (but may also read on occasion). - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: - vinyl (until I get my DAC (CD system) going again). - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): - all genres - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track? - I prefer to listen to whole sides at least, or all 2 sides, esp. with classical.

For home listening only (although I'm listening to more music when not at home, such as during work, driving, twice daily walks). - How often do you listen to music and for how long? I'm listening every day, at least an album, usually a few albums. Less so in the weekend as busy doing other things.- Alone or with company? Always with at least one furry friend by my side, be that animal or human...- What time of day? Generally between 9 am and 9 pm, or else my neighbours would kill me. Outside of these hours its headphone listening.
- Lights/Doors: If at night I like to turn all the lights off except for a lamp by the turntable. Doors? Occasionally play Light My Fire but probably only every few years - Speakers or headphones? Speakers 9am to 9 pm, Headphones 9pm to 9 am due to the above killer neighbours.- How loud do you play? 70-80db seems about right Anything over 85db average is too loud for my delicate ears.- Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? I try to listen to at least one album exclusively (unless you count drinking!). Otherwise, I'm working, cooking then eating, reading in analogue, or reading in digital on the computer. etc. - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: 99.9% Vinyl. The rest split between CDs (.01), Tidal (.05), streamed stations (.01) or old fashioned FM radio (.03). - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): I like to mix it up, so anything goes.- Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track? Its too hard to jump tracks on vinyl! But must admit that I sometimes only listen to one side before skipping to the next record. My bad!

Thanks for sharing your habits. A few things I find interesting in the listening experience: - Men vs Women: despite the fact my other half also likes music a lot she will never ever turn on the amplifier herself and play music. She will much rather just use her mobile despite the fact that sound is really poor. A friend of mine was telling me the exact same thing: it’s really surprising how the whole hifi experience is more of a male thing (although women are equally interested in music they just don’t seem to care about hifi). - There is something magical about the whole listening process: for me it’s one of the joys of life to be able to reproduce music in a realistic way. In that respect late night listening by lifting off all visual distractions really helps the experience take-off. I can go for hours in late night listening. Also it’s really quite so even lower volumes are possible (our walls are really thick however so we don’t risk getting our neighbors disturbed).

My listening habits have quite drastically changed this year for reasons I can't really explain. After spending the last two years updating parts of my system for retirement, rather than spending enjoyable hours listening I find myself rarely venturing into my music room. Still I do listen to some music each day. If my wife is out in the evening I do spend quite a lot of time watching music videos on you tube but sound is compromised via sound bar. Most evenings I do try and get some time with headphones in the bedroom system as well. Total time per day probably a couple of hours.
Rarely listen in company. My wife has different tastes preferring Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano to my more rock/country/folk tastes. Honorable exception to going solo is the occasional visit by forum member Foveaux.
Time of day, this year at night between 7.30pm and around 10.30. I used to spend time in the music room on the weekends for a couple of hours mid afternoon. Always a night time coffee but nothing stronger.
Lights off in bedroom system, soft glow 40w std lamp in the lounge.
Soundbar with You Tube in lounge, headphones in bedroom system.
Volume not very loud, especially with headphones. Loud isn't needed with good phones.
When I'm on You Tube I do flick around quite a lot. Just watched some Canned Heat, Eurythmics and Pavarotti. Follow the arrow . Bedroom is via cd and I stick to one record at a time right through. Usually I'm concentrating just on the music without distractions.
Music styles, not as mixed as some on this forum, especially if I'm utilising my own software. Rock/pop/blues/folk/alt. Generally at night though it's more gentle sounds like Rosanne Cash or Richard Thompson rather than Metallica or the Rolling Stones.
The few times I have used my music room I find i'm listening more and more to cd/sacd etc rather than lps. Some of this may be down to my obsession with cartridge setup and I'm never really satisfied that I have things at an optimum settings, so much simpler just to pop a digital disc in and forget about it. My other problem is with deteriorating hearing. I feel that is having a detrimental bearing on my enjoyment of the speaker setup but headphones still sound ok, enjoyable in fact. At some stage in the next few months I'll see about hearing aids but am not holding out for any miracles for audio reception and if there's no improvement and a bump in enjoyment levels then I may just have to resort to being a headphone listener full time. Not the end of the world.
ps. When the weather is right I do sprawl out on either the couch in the conservatory or under the Oak tree in the back yard with a Fiio X5/amp and Oppo PM-3 Phones. Over 6000 songs in minimum cd quality. I find that acceptable.

Nice cooksferry, I can understand the obsession with turntable setup: I'm in a bit of a similar mode, I've just ordered a number of resistors for the phono and realigned the cartridge, can be haunting!

- How often do you listen to music and for how long? - Most days but sometimes not for a few days at a time. - Alone or with company? Both. - What time of day? Anytime on my day off, evenings up to bedtime. - Lights/Doors: we're open-plan so no doors. Lights on. It's a whole-house experience! - Speakers or headphones? Speakers all the way. - How loud do you play? Quite. Live levels, similar to Owen's answer. - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? Sometimes exclusively, often while cooking. While my wife vegetates. - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: Vinyl 80%, CD 5%, ConcertFM 15% - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): Sometimes, but also letters of the alphabet (ie., all the Ks) and sometimes all the side 3s. Or only live albums. Or just 1968 or 1979, for example. - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track: Mostly full sides but sometimes it's a 7" evening.

- How often do you listen to music and for how long? Used to be most days but the stereo has been switched off for a couple of weeks now waiting for me to swap ML panels left to right to confirm the issue documented in another thread. - Alone or with company? Alone mostly. My wife and kids think I have odd taste in music.... - What time of day? Usually in the evening though a fresh coffee and some Steely Dan on Sunday morning is something of a tradition. - Lights/Doors: Usually behind doors so as not to upset other household members. Lights must be dim. - Speakers or headphones? Speakers exclusively, don't own any 'phones. - How loud do you play? Not very, trying to protect the hearing I still have. - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? Exclusively. Never understood the appeal of 'background music', to me that's just noise. - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: 95%CD, 5% vinyl, files/streaming? What's that? - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): I have periods where I'm absorbed (obsessed?) by a particular genre then tend to tire and drift toward another. - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track: Pretty-much always the entire album.

-How often do you listen to music and for how long? Ave 6 days a week. Ave 2-3 hours each session - Alone or with company? Alone 98% of the time, mostly because of the answer to the 6th question below. - What time of day? Usually 5pm to 7pm (ish), generally alcohol is involved - Lights/Doors: on/open - Speakers or headphones? Speakers exclusively - How loud do you play? Concert volume. - Do you do that exclusively or you do other things in parallel? Usually reading or playing some dumb phone game in parallel - Vinyl/CD/Files/Streaming: Vinyl 95%. CD 5%. I refuse to go down any other rabbit holes - Do you listen to a specific genre each time (ie. only Classical or Jazz): No, I will often deliberately alter the genre to break the groove. - Do you usually listen to albums (end to end) or you jump from track to track? usually end to end, although many an LP has been frisbeed onto the sell pile before it gets to the last track

On album vs tracks: I guess Vinyl forces you to stay with an album (or at least half of it) while with digital it is just too easy to press the button, it’s another way of listening in a way.

Depends if I’m listening on headphones or not. Headphones means I’m close to the ‘button’ (the tonearm lifter) or the ‘next‘ button. Speakers means I’m too far away from the record to endure the inconvenience of getting up and changing the track.
