My integrated amp does not have pre-amp in facility. It does have a switchable HT by pass input. i understand using that switch turns the power amp section of my integrated into a slave of a HT receiver, bypassing the pre amp section. so, instead of a HT receiver, if I connected, say a good quality pre/dac/headphone amp would that work? Any one tried it?

Sounds like it should work! Test carefully.

Don't you love it when you've typed your story and go to post and it disappears!
My Musical Fidelity M3i has the same switch on one of the inputs. Very handy when I want to compare my "passive" preamp and the integrated pre.(which sound very similar)
So switched to bypass it acts just like an amplifier.
And I can also use my dac with its own built-in preamp direct into the amp. So yes it works.
