I was having trouble uploading pics (of an amplifier) to a friend in a gmail message, rang him just now, he found he couldn't either.
He found historic posts about that, but I've just found this very recent link about Google Drive :
(which may use the same servers for picture uploads into emails?)
People are complaining from all over the world.
Also see the map at and zoom in to Auckland, which has a fuzzy red spot.
Yeah, speculative fiction, if a bad nation or other actor torpedoes the cloud, or the cables connecting countries...
Years ago I used to use Pegasus Mail, then later Thunderbird, so everything was local on a PC, but for 10yrs+ I've used gmail on the interweb.
Hopefully it'll be fixed soon, but there is a sense of vulnerability.

Our Google sheets is still live. I use Thunderbird as my desktop email client. Thanks, Owen. At some stage I might look to migrating at least important messages to Thunderbird. Just now, I've found that I can't even send a text only message, whereas before (when discussing with said friend on phone) we found we could, just not one with an inline pic. Yes, I restarted the whole PC, and browser. Still, the incoming messages on the above link are compelling, every few minutes. I might try it on another PC or laptop. This desktop is on MX Linux, the i5 laptop on Ubuntu 18, there is an i5 SFF PC on Win 7 I could try too. This is the kind of message I was getting, even if it did appear to upload, but in early stages the progress bar wouldn't even start, and then there was an error message. Ah well we will wait and see how fast locked down engineers or IT people can fix this. Interesting that you don't have a problem with Drive. Have you tried uploading anything to it, or even just inserting a photo ... ah, if you're using Thunderbird, maybe different from gmail on the web.

Hmm, seems to be fixed now. We've both been able to send pics again. Storm in a teacup? Still, that downdetector.com/ site is useful whenever unsure, and there was definitely a blip with Google just recently!
