Amazing collection of stuff he’s parting with!
I bet the Voyd & SME combo would be something special... alongside those Audio Research amp(s) and big Shahinians!!!

It's really hard to value the Aura. I've had mine for a couple of years now and in my head its very valuable because its one of the most enjoyable pieces of HiFi I've ever owned. If this Aura does not sell for double the current price I'l be gutted. But to be honest, I have no reference for the market value so really that would be down to my perception of what its worth. It must be the same for guys who are into DIY and build fantastic things. Then when it comes the time to let them go!! My perception of value relates to its age, its a kiwi icon, a piece of art and not a bad turntable (and also because I bought it from Gary Lambert). Generally when trying to figure out actual worth I go to HiFi Shark, but you wont see many Aura's for sale (This one is on there).

Is the seller the guy who runs the record shop in Napier ? I cant remember the name of the store but they did equipment as well as SH and new vinyl the only time I visited a couple of years back. Nice older guy and his wife owned the place. When we talked turntables it turned out he had an Oracle.

Gordon... quite a polarising chap! I remember him telling me directly my amp was rubbish many years back.

You guys have obviously never met Frank Densom from Soundline. Not only is your gear rubbish but if you listen to anything other than Living Sound classical then so are your musical tastes and you are wasting your time with HiFi.

You mean he's not right?

Post by cartridgeguyonline on Aug 8, 2020 16:30:39 GMT 12
The humorous part is that he widely rubbished the amp and designer (as well as my musical tastes), who is now working for Soundline. And No he wasnt right, he was just a classical music snob. But he wasnt the only one to be fair as the Linn Naim guys were Opera snobs as well.

I admire someone who is forthright about their passion. But not at the expense of putting other's gear/taste down. That's just rude.

Gordie @ For The Record in Napier... I've seen him yell at a customer for merely suggesting that he'd like to purchase an amplifier with tone controls on the front of it.
As in, a stand-up argument.
The absolute hatred between him and his competitor down the road is palpable. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Or... was that, it would be sad, if it wasn't so funny?

I believe Tim used to work for Gordon at one point, and there is some bad blood there. I remember the radio ad when Tim opened his shop featured that track Jilted John, with "Gordon is a moron" repeating over and over...

HiFi Gallery/Just For The Record is Gordon's shop. The other shop is Soundhaus by Schuler run by Tim Schuler Geoff Dunn used to work for Gordon too. He told me Gordon nearly had an aneurysm when he received an order I returned because none of the records matched his grading.
PS read the Google reviews for Just For The Record

Was he right...mmmmm....Well it was my Musical Fidelity A370. A monster of an amp driving I think from memory a pair of reference Kefs. I liked it. Not sure who he thinks he is. He didnt gain any friends on that day thats for sure... Hes a total twat imo!! The owner of Soundline also had me "thinking" about his choice of words also when he had the audacity to inform me my Tad R1s wouldnt be as good as they should be when they were being driven by my Signature Absolarè integrated Tim at Soundhaus on the other hand sourced a replacement Lyra cartridge for me through an insurance claim and definitely got me a very very smart deal! Very pleased.

mmmmm....Well it was my Musical Fidelity A370. A monster of an amp Very cool (well, probably pretty warm!). I’ve always wanted to hear one of those big MFs, having really enjoyed owning a couple of the smaller ones from that era (A1, A100).
Their larger format amps must’ve been few & far between in NZ!?

Just for the record it was. Never got onto discussing HiFi with him much apart from talking about his Oracle, which he showed me photos of and which I admired greatly.

I bought my Naim DVD5 in about 2004 from Gordon, still using it as a cd transport now. It was a pleasant experience, he even gave me a folder in which to put hifi instruction manuals. We had a MF A370 at the shop. It was a simple circuit iirc but with an extensive mosfet output stage and had the clout to open out the big Dynaudios and bring them alive.

If he tells you stuff like that you just say with a grin on your face "fuck off Frank, what would you know"

I read all the online reviews for Just for the Record. So bad I just had to call in when we had a couple of days in Napier. I found him to be pleasant enough but I did make it known early on that I was only browsing. I thought the shop was quite well setup . I have to admit to not revealing much about my hardware these days as my choices have been quite regularly shot down at a couple of South Island shops. Soundline not one though as the younger staff I've had dealings with have been helpful with a nice trade in price towards my last Dyna cart.

"...not revealing much about my hardware these days as my choices have been quite regularly shot down at a couple of South Island shops." Yahaha Cooks, You're too much of a gentleman Cooks. I dare any dealer to shoot down your excellent system mate...if they do, let me be there when you demolish their narrow mindedness!
