Here's a bargain for someone. A pair of Enabled Mark Audio drivers (worth the asking price alone) in Frugalhorn enclosures. You can read about the Enable process on Diyaudio. www.trademe.co.nz/2706349473

Why do buyers say must do pickup... Very frustrating.
The horn is a corner horn, so if you do bid, be aware of that. They are really good, but not big... and of course no crossover
An EnABLed driver, by the way, has better performance... Too many people report improvement in sound with those dots and dashes applied to their drivers!
And, yeah, Gary is right, bargain.

Cool,
I've been looking at mark audio drivers for a while now.
This could be my chance.....

Really rough woodwork and glue etc.
Shave the corners to be a bit more aerodynamic?
Recess the driver to be flush?

I'm all for such simple DIY, single-driver designs, but the Frugal Horn isn't really a 'horn' - it's a Tapered Pipe. It's a variation of Voigt's 'Tapered Quarter Wave Pipe' (TQWP, folded) concept from the 1930s. Strangely, a lot of builders abandon (or fail to understand) one of the key parameters & fail to place the driver at the 1/3 point 'pressure minimum' within the resonating pipe - which Voigt found would enable an octave & a half of smooth bass extension from a single small driver. (Voigt patented it.) Any speaker placed near a room corner will excite LF room modes (not necessarily a bad thing, as 3 room boundaries are involved, which helps in-room LF uniformity). In this case, could provide some corner loading for the LF port (potentially reducing port/mouth 'reflection'). The side-wall extensions are a cute idea & might help this port (mouth) loading.

Owen is right it is not a horn and therefore not necessarily highly efficient e.g. Jordan modules. The driver in a Voigt pipe needs to be at a point where there is 1/3 volume above (sealed) and 2/3 volume below (open port) and therefore is a variation on the Helmholtz resonator aka bass reflex. The Cain and Cain Abby is probably the best execution of this idea and manages to tame the Fostex drivers peak between 3 to 7 k. I have a pair which give surprisingly good bass into the low 40s and is better with a current amp e.g. First Watt F1 and 2. The cabinets on the TM examples are a bit rough to be an absolute bargain.

I was referring to the drivers... They are a bargain if the price stays close to where it started.

The standard Alpiar-5 Gen 3 costs US$47.70 from Madisound (I couldn't find prices for eNable coated versions) so at the current exchange rate plus GST for a pair, the cost (not including postage) would be about $166 which is not far off the TM asking price.

Yeah it's the Enable process that adds cost. It's hand applied by Dave from Planet 10.

I'm curious about coatings and processes on speaker cones and (gulp) sometimes valves / capacitors. The common one Damar has been used on violins for centuries and may be useful for hydroscopic paper cones in humid climates. The flaky one C37 (E175 for 50 mls) is said to resonate with the ear bone (Just to be helpful carbon is 14 on the periodic table) and / or the mysterious resonant frequency of the universe. Or something. Has anyone had practical experiences with any of these other than watered down PVA in the 70's?

garym - at some stage, we'll create a separate thread, to minimise digression from your thread topic. (It's all good, there's interest, so deserves continuing discussion.)

BudP the originator of the process also had a thread on "groundside" electrons. I made a couple of his wire loops and they made quite a difference on the single driver speakers I had at the time. The effect wasn't obvious though on the later two way open baffle that I built. Strange world out there.
